Hello all

Can anyone please tell me the correct settings for a PS3 audio output  into a beovision 9 (bs3) using hdmi.

I am the proud new owner of a (used) beovision 9, after replacing my old beovision 3.  It is just great and PQ is excellent. I still use a humax fox sat as the main decoder but have replaced an ageing DVD player with a PS3 which gives me blue ray hd and smart tv capability, and also one headache! The surround sound does not sound as good as it did on the Beosystem 3.

The bv9 setup is  8000s front, 6000s rear, Lab 2 subwoofer, roles set as Front left and right, surround left and right and sub. Do the white noise sound level test and everything is good.

So.. I got hold of a thx optimiser (on the incredibles dvd) and ran the audio tests, and no sound comes from the surround speakers or the sub.. I have tried a bunch of options on the PS3 but so far no sound from those speakers. When test puts sound to the surround sound speakers some sound comes out of the front speakers, but never any sound when the sub is selected.

There is some sound from all the speakers when playing a DVD with 5.1 but, as I say, not as good as the bv3 using a scart connector!  Help!

Thanks.

What ps3 do you have if you have the slim version set the audio to bitstream.

Hi markiedee

I have the new super slim version. So I should set bitstream (currently pcm 2) and which format(s) ?

Thanks

I have a BV9 and a PS3, but can't remember the settings. But I am sure that PCM 2 means stereo. You can always check the incoming signal on the BV9, by choosing sound in the menu. I can't remember the exact path, but I can check when I get home.

You can select bitstream if you want your BS3 decode the audio signal, but if the BS3 doesn't decode HD sound formats you can select PCM, so PS3 decode the HD format and obtain the best audio quality. In the video below you can see all the options you have to select to obtain the best audio and video quality, is for slim model, but I think there is no much difference between this model and the new one:

Thank you all!

I set the PS3 to bitstream output so that the BS3 does all the work and now it all works as it should  :-)  The thx optimiser disk runs perfectly now and I tested the first minutes of a 5.1 movie and it sounds MUCH better! I'm looking forward to trying a whole movie tonight.

I think it was the fact that you need to go into the video menu to choose bitstream output and I was playing around in the sound menu trying to fix things by changing things there, and failing!

Much respect, and thanks again.

Sorry guys,

but you are not right.

If you send the sound as Bitstream to the BV9, the BV9 will downmix a HD-soundformat played from the BR-Disc to DTS 5.1.

Might sound great, but is not the best.

It is 'common knowledge' that BV's can not handle the HD-soundformats.

Therefore you should always let the player do the decoding.

In this case the PS3 should be set to send all audio in PCM aka LPCM.

Try it - and see what happens in the soundsettings of the BV9.

The output in the BV-settings should be PCM - nothing else.

Greetings Millemissen

Note: if the receiver - in this case the surround-decoder of the BV9 - (unlike the Onkyo-receiver in the YouTube-video) could handle HD-sound Bitstream would be the right choice.

There is a tv - and there is a BV

I don't own a beovision but going with what i used when i had an av receiver alongside a ps3 or bluray player when set to bitstream i always had either dolby true hd or dts hd.

It seems to be a different story with beovision tvs apologies for any confusion.

If your av receiver decodes HD audio formats you can set PS3 or bluray player to bitstream. If you set to PCM, PS3 or bluray player decodes the HD audio formats. So it depends on quality of the decoder whether bitstream or PCM offers a better sound quality.

But because all Beovisions can't decode HD audio formats, you have to set PS3 or bluray player to PCM, otherwise you don't get HD audio.

Hi Millemissen

Now I'm confused. Using a BR disc with DTS hd 7.1 and with the PS3 setting to LPCM the beovision 9 sound output says input pcm 7.1 - output multichannel 5 speaker

Setting to bitstream and the beovisoon 9 says input dolby 5.1 output dolby digital 5 speaker

So now I have to ask what is the difference with the two outputs and (as I have 5 speakers) which is best for me and why ?

I do want to get the best set-up I can

thanks wortonmiller

Hi wortonmiller,

we had a similar discussion in german forum a few days ago:

http://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/4174.aspx?PageIndex=2

With a bluray (5.1 DTS-HD MA audio format) in my internal bluray player of BV 7-40 3D I can select the following in the settings of bluray player:

1. STANDARD

2. BITSTRAM

In case 1. I get INPUT AUDIO FORMAT: PCM 7.1, OUTPUT AUDIO FORMAT: MULTICHANNEL SPEAKER 5

In case 2. I get INPUT AUDIO FORMAT: DTS 5.1, OUTPUT AUDIO FORMAT: DTS SPEAKER 5

If you want to hear HD audio format, case 1. is the way to go. Ask "Millemissen", he is the real specialist!

But I have to admit that I cannot hear a real difference...

Thanks Raeuber, I will have to test few more movies but like you i'm not hearing much difference between the two,  but I'm learning more :-)

One other thing to keep in mind - a minor point for sure - but if you let the Blu-ray player convert the audio internally, it will include the menu sounds and any commentary in the feed automatically. Otherwise, you would have to switch settings if you use the bitstream settings. I prefer to keep it simple and let my player convert audio all the time, and still have the quality of the high quality DTS and Dolby formats converted to PCM.
