Hello,

My name is Gerald and this is my first post here.

I am planning to implement in our new living room a stereo + surround sound setup next year.

The room has a size of about 4.5 m x 4.5 m, but on one side about 1.5 m is also used as corridor. This means: The effective area remaining for watching films and hearing music.will be 3 m x 4.5 m, where the stereo speakers will be placed on a shorter side.

In this room a 5.1.4 system with Dolby Atmos will fit the best.

As backbone a Denon Heos Multiroom system is already installed driving ceiling speakers in the different rooms (BeoVox 1 and others) which is connected to the home automation system implemented with KNX.Therefore I want to use a Denon or Marantz AV Receiver to add then the stereo pair as zone in the multiroom audio system.

As stereo pair (front right / front left) I own already a pair of Beolab 9, which I really like.

As rear speakers I am thinking about BeoLab 8000 or BeoLab 6000, but I tend more to Beolab 8000.They should be mounted to the wall. I know, this is very critical, because the speakers are quite near to the listeners ears ... maybe a pair of dipol speakers would fit better.

As center speaker I would like to use a BeoLab 10 and integrate it directly in the low board at the screen.

Regarding the subwwofer it depends, if it should be visible or not (WAF). If it should be visible, I tend to BeoLab 11. Alternatively I would use something from Klipsch and mount it directly invisiible in the low board at the screen.

As effect speakers I want use BeoVox2-1 powered over the inbuilt amplifier of the AVR.

What do you think about that combination? Where would you improve or use other speakers?

You can answer me in german or english.

Danke und Schöne Grüße / Thank you and best regards

Gerald

If you already own BL9s there is definitely no point using a BL11 as a sub. The 9s already have far more capable bass built in. That might even be true for a BL2 or 19.

Agree - absolutely no need for a subwoofer (if you are able to do proper basmanagement eith the denon/Maranz).

As I see your room layout, it will be different to place the 8000’s (or the 6000’s) at rhe back.

Why not go for a set of the BL3’s and placecthese high above - they can be turned doenwards on the brackets.

That is.....if you want to use Bang & Olufsen speakers there at all.

As for Dolby Atmos, a good rule of thumb is first to get the base layer (the 5.1/5.0 right and working.

The center channel is essential!

When that is done, you may add the hight channels.

But honestly....do you really need these in that small (part of the) room?

Hello and thank you for your answers.

@Duels

Thank you for the hint. Maybe it is a topic of bass management as mentioned by Millemissen.
For music I anyhow do not need the extra subwofer. Regarding Beolab 2 I read that i may harmonize with Beolab 2, because it's much less precise then Beolab 9's bass.  So, maybe a Beolab 19 or another non-B&O Subwoofer will be more meaningful - or with correct bass management no additional subwoofer.

@Millemissen

Thank you. I have currently no experience with bass management. However, if there is a possibility to set gain and frequency filters for the individual channels, I think I am already at the safe side.

Regarding Beolab 3 ... I read already a lot of good things about it. However I have one problem with it ... I don't like it's design at all. Which speakers will perform simmilar to Beolab 3 mounted directly on wall? From the visual aspect I really like Beolab 3000/ Beolab 4500, Beolab 4000 followed by Beolab 8000/ Beolab 6000/ Beolab 1 ... Beolab 17. Alternatively I also like Beosound Shape.

In general the components - except the front speakers - should be integrated as discrete as possible.

Of course, the room is not optimal and the space is limited and a compromise. Thus, the Atmos speakers  should be integrated in the ceiling (where also indirect lighting and other stuff will be integrated), I have to plan this in advance in detail and for the 5.1(0).4 system.

As you were mentioning the importance of the center: Do you think Beolab 10 would be a good choice in my setup?

Best regards and thank you,
Gerald

Hello,

I decided now to buy a BeoLab10 as center speaker.

Fortunately I found a great offer of an BeoLab10 in almost new-Condition.

I also testet it together with my Beolab 9 currently without optimal setup and without a correct center-signal - i only reused the left channel signal. Even in this constellation the sound of BeoLab 10 is impressive. And I really like it's Design.

But I'm still not sure about the rear speakers.

In general, it may be possible to bring the couch a little bit away from the wall - this will relax the situation with the rear speakers.

A lot speaks for Beolab 3 ... from design-point of view they are not my first choice. But I start to become friends with them.

However, also Beolab 12-3 may be an interesting alternative.

For shure they will perform better than BeoLab 6000 / BeoLab 8000. And they seems to be a bit better than BeoLab 3 ,,, however, they do not have speakers to the sides, like BeoLab3.

From design, I would prefer BeoLab 12-3. The price is also ok for me.

However, I am not sure which ones will fit better in my setup.

Best Regards,
Gerald

Looking at the layout of your room, I’d go for some BL3’s on the wall behind you.

They are small and discrete and yet powerfull.

And you can angle these as you wish/need toward the listening position.

Ideally the sound from surround speakers should come from the side of the listening position - this will be very har (in your room) with some 6000/8000’s, neither with the 12-3’s.

P.S. You can get the 3’s in different colours.

Note: a 5.x.x has no rear speakers - rear speakers are additional speakers in a 7.x.x setup and should be placed behind you.

Hi @Millemissen

thank you for your comment.

I know, the BeoLab 3 may be perfect for me.

Regarding the Color ..... there is also the possibility to paint them in a color I like ... as I have seen, a lot of BeoLab3 have problems with the original paint - thus it may be anyhow needed to paint them.

I think, you would also go for the original B&O Wall brackets instead of STBbrackets ceiling brackets? At which height would you mount them? The room has a height of about 2.45 m.

You are right, there are not real rear speakers in the 5.x.x setup. However in my room it is not possible to setup speakers completly at the side. However, having the Speaker at rear/side - on the wall.

Best Regards,
Gerald

The height should not be the biggest problem.

Of course they should not be mounted just where you are sitting.

And the wall brackets allow you to angle and turn them pretty much.

Should you decide to go for some ceiling speakers too, you should however, not place the BL3’s too high up.

If not, they can be a bit higher up imo.
