Yes. MMC5 is the most basic cartridge (spherical diamond on aluminium cantilever) and MMC1 the advanced (contact line diamond on sapphire cantilever).

If so, then yes, MMC1 was the best of the MMC1-5 range.
Today, most cartridges will require a re-tip because of wear or damage and most will also require a new internal suspension, so you will be able
to upgrade even the lowest range MMC5 to better specs than those of the original MMC1.
