Hi

My 7007 record player was playing ok. Now despite trying many different counterbalance settings, the arm just seems to skate too lightly and the sound is very muffled. I had a new MMC5 i put in (that my father bought 20 years ago) and it played fine for a while, then this problem started happening.

When i press PH, the arm does what it should...goes up, across, drops down onto the record. In some occasions the stylus slips off the record onto the stainless steel deck...weird. The little plastic arm support mechanism drops down every time to drop the stylus so it doesnt appear to be that.

Also I notice that regardless of counterbalance weight the stylus seems to skate too easily out of the record groove. I was wondering if that my 20 year old mmc5 stylus might be degraded over time such that its easily blunted. A blunt stylus might make sense, but how if it hasnt been used...well im assuming it hasnt.

Does anyone have any ideas please? I can post video if that helps.

Id like to keep the unit running so my daughter can use it for years to come....

Thanks/Danke/Merci/Tak

You probably need to adjust the set down point for 12" records. You can see how to do it in the service manual.

Also, it sounds like you have not balanced the arm properly. Turn the counterbalance until the arm floats, tip it lightly and it shoud go back to floating, then turn the small dial to zero. After this you can set the tracking weight which I believe should be around 1.5 grams.

Hi

it turned out to be an old stylus. I got a new one from Soundsmith in the US and problem solved. I thought the stylus was a lot newer than it actually was....

thanks everyone
