Good morning guys,
Today was a lucky day (maybe): I've bought a bag full of little things B&O!
The thing is I have some question on how I can check if they're working or not, and for some of then what I can do with them. Here we go, appart various master link and power link cables I got:
A Beocenter 2 "black box" with main cable:- I suppose it's useless without the head? EDIT - Yes- Could it be pin protected? EDIT - Yes- Any way of checking something without the head? So far the answer is still no
An ML/MCL converter, type 1651, no IR eye and Beolink passive, type 1656, no IR eye.- How to check them? EDIT - tried with Beosound -> power link -> to Converter without IR eye -> to passive speakers : Didnt work! EDIT - It works, be sure to use a fully wired 8 pins powerlink cable (thin cables have 8 pins but not all are actually wired!)
Last but not least, A Beosystem 3 Type 9600, with two little IR pearls wired on jacks.- What MK is that? couldn't find on the forum. EDIT - Looks like a MK1.
- Could it be pin protected? EDIT 2 - No PIN protection on MK1.- How to check it? EDIT 2 - It need an IR eye to startup.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
For the BeoLink Passive, you can connect it to passive speakers and a Beosound via PowerLink (make sure it is a full PL cable because the Passive is looking for a trigger signal on one of the pins that not every PL cable supports). This will at least test the amp. I believe you would need an IR eye (and Beosound and ML cable) to test the MasterLink capabilities.

Beolab 50, Beolab 8000 x 2, Beolab 4000 x 2, BeoSound Core, BeoSound 9000, BeoSound Century, BeoLit 15, BeoPlay A1, BeoPlay P2, BeoPlay H9 3rd Gen, BeoPlay H6, EarSet 3i, BeoVision Eclipse Gen 2 55", BeoPlay V1-40, BeoCom 6000 and so much else :)
Well dodgy !
An interesting mix for sure. If you are looking for a Beocenter 2 head , make sure its a match for your black box. I believe there's a few options.
I too am curious how to test a BS3. Again many versions with different software which Im guessing could be upgraded ?
I don't understand "dodgy"
But if you mean that it's a way to place an ad, I've thought to it when posting. The post went to moderation and was published, so I assume moderation team trust my question are real.
(And they are)

Then I could use a spare Ouverture with passive speakers, at least to test it?Interesting, thanks
After some search, it looks like I need an IR eye plugged int the DB9 socket to at least wake up the BS3.
Keith Saunders: Martin, Besides the very large number of software updates which effected both versions and the introduction of "Adaptive Sound Technology", the only core changes provided by the mark 2 I can note from reviewing the spec are:- Formats provide 24 pictures per second FHD 1920 x 1080p There are two system module outputs now with the addition of an "F" connector for the US market The Mark 1 version has "Type" numbers 9600 to 9612 and was sold between June 2006 and Dec 2008 The Mark 2 version has "Type" numbers 9615 to 9628 and was released around October 2008

Found that post from Keith Saunders teaching me it is an MK1.
My lucky find is less and less lucky :-)
Could someone confirm the Beosystem won't start without IR eye?
Or could it be another way to check if it starts?
Thanks.
Hi matador43, on the right hand side, just above the 230V power socket, there is an LED to indicate that the device is on. I reckon you will only be able to switch the BS3 on and operate it with the use of an IR eye and a remote. And be aware, it can be set to remotes with or without NAVI buttons (I found that out :-) but the lines in the menu have numbers that you can select by pressing that number on the remote.
Thank you Johan,
That's a progress, There is indeed a green led which light for a couple of seconds when plugged and the goes off. There is some life inside !
Didnt notice that before ! Thank you.

Hi Stan,
I've tried that this morning. The Beolink Passive click when plugged and theres is a little light inside that goes green for a couple of seconds and then red.But no sound from the speakers with several Powerlink cables, including the one that do trigger the Beolab 2500 (5 pins) and some others with 8 pins.
Even tried with the Masterlink cable just in case. But no sound at all. :(

Michael:For me it sounds like stolen goods
Ah, Ok,
I've bought it via a well known website for local ads (Leboncoin) to a guy who owns a business in home automation.he told me he got this when removing old stuff from a client's home, he was installing "something" into.Everything was covered with plaster dust.
The ad was public, I picked it up at the company's office and paid 15€ for the lot.
The guy had a bunch of old AV, security, network things to scrap.
All this to say that if it was stolen goods, they are very poor thieves.
Maybe I'm wrong but seems legit to me.

Michael:Crazy good price
Only if I a manage to get them to work
I can confirm my BeoSystem 3 will only start when I have the IR eye plugged in. I use this one. It came from my BeoMedia originally.
The IR pearls are for PUC control.
Stoobie
Hi Stoobie,
Thank you for the confirmation.
It's at the sea time a good news (because it gives room for hope) and a sad news (since I can't enjoy it until I get a (cheap) eye!
Your pictures show a jack connector. does this mean you can use the IR in Jack on the BS3 or does the IT eye need to be absolutely connected to the DB9 socket ?
Hi Matador,
That photo is the one I am currently using on my BS3. It shows the wiring too.
Thank you Stoobie.

I finally managed to get a fully wired powerlink cable and it worked for both units as you said: Beolink Passive and ML/MCL converter.
So thank you.
Stoobietoo:I can confirm my BeoSystem 3 will only start when I have the IR eye plugged in.
Finally got an eye today and as you said, it did start up and is working.
No traces of Pin code protection at startup or in the menus.
So all is working now!
Excellent news.
I'm still experimenting with mine connected to my LG OLED 65. Trying to distribute sound around my Masterlink system.
I can't help at all: this thing is simply not for me. Not enough video sources, not enough beolabs, not enough Masterlink devices. The only use I have of it is maybe to trade it for a Beomaster 5500 and some other little toys! Finger crossed!
