Hello all,

I was happily using the remote last night, Beo4 Mk4 with the toggle - I’ve never had any problems with it. I put it down and went downstairs. Half an hour later I picked it up again to change channel but nothing happened.

I assumed it was just the batteries. I changed them this morning but no joy. Changed them again just in case and still no joy.

Actually, I say no joy, after the first battery change I pressed the tv button and the tv came on, but that was it, it hasn’t done anything since. The lcd display is working but I’ve just popped batteries back in and all it is showing is TV, it had been changing DTV to TV etc etc.

i’m using the B&O remote app on my iPhone meanwhile, so hopefully the problem is with the remote rather than the tv.

Any advice would be very much appreciated, the last thing I can afford at the moment is to cough up for another one of these.

Thank you - David

+1.  My Beo4 works for 15 seconds after insertion of batteries or 1 button-press, whichever comes first -- until batteries are removed and left out for "a long while".

Hope someone offers you a suggestion on repair...  I bought a BeoRemote One instead, out of sheer laziness!  But I'll crack mine open again, if you get an answer that sounds likely.

I have two of those Angry

The remote works and suddenly stop working, get stuck on a command and don't work anymore until the batteries are removed.
Then I need to let the remote "chill" and then it could work agai,n sometimes for days, sometimes for minutes only.

I've suspected a sequence of keys which would freeze the remote but was never able to track that.

In order:

Are you sure that the Beo4 is transmitting an IR signal?  Have you viewed the end of the remote with a phone camera whilst pressing the buttons - you should see the LEDs glowing when you do so?

What Beo4 'MODE' are you using?  This is all explained in the manual, so you can check that you have the right one.  You can also carry out a 'reset to default' which would be worth trying.

What TV are you using?  Is there a chance that it is set to V.OPT 0, where it will not respond to IR remote commands?

Perhaps the remote is set to LINK MODE, where it will only operate a device set up with the appropriate LINK options.

Hi Guy,

Thank you for replying.

I thought the problem had been solved this morning - the batteries had been out for about 12 hours. I put them back in and it worked as usual. This evening I’ve got in to find it has stopped again.

At the moment I can’t see the led’s with the phone camera.

I’m not sure what the mode is - I didn’t actually realise there was another mode other than what it has been in - unless I’ve accidentally pressed a sequence of buttons that has caused all of this. I had been watching tv, I’d only pressed the dtv button for Virgin, some channel numbers and the volume. I put it down and half an hour later it wasn’t doing anything. I don’t think I’d pressed anything out of the ordinary.

I’m using it with  bv10-46.

I don’t have a manual, I’ll have a look online. I thought about trying to do a reset but I’m worried that it will knock out all the programming for Apple TV, virgin etc etc, that the engineer did when the tv was installed.

In this case I wouldn't worry about the modes (or the TV settings) - there seems to be some sort of intermittent power problem.

- Are the batteries secure - i.e is the little spring pressing them together to ensure a good electrical contact?  If the spring has become compressed and is not effective, you may be able to extend it slightly with pliers/tweezers.

- Are the battery contacts clean, or is there corrosion (this can often be caused by leaking flat batteries)?  Maybe use the end of a disposable nail file (if there is one in your household!) to clean off the contacts.  If there is a battery corrosion deposit of any sort, a little bit of vinegar on a Q-tip should dissolve/remove - but don't use too much, and dry it off afterwards.

If you use an iPhone, you must use the front camera (screen side).

But if I remember well, when my Beo4 go rogue it still emit IR

That certainly was a problem with Beolink 1000s, but not the Beo4 to my knowledge.

But it's worth a description to see if it matches: With a Beolink 1000, if the power went on/off multiple times quickly, the processor/controller would wedge until power was taken off completely and the capacitors discharged.  This often happened in old remotes simply **by setting them down** (because the foam on the battery compartment lid would be flat and the contacts either un-springy or corroded)!  The fast way to reset was alligator-clip the two ends +/- of emptied battery compartment together, wait a few seconds, and reinsert the batteries.

I think this wasn't the problem with my Beo4, but it's certainly easy to test: as you suggest, clean and re-spring-ify the contacts, and don't jostle after reinserting batteries.

Might be onto something here. I’ve stretched the spring, gently pulled the tab at the other end and filed the batteries, and so far so good. I don’t want to speak too soon but it seems to have done the trick - so thank you very much for the advice.

Might have spoken too soon.

It’s worked perfectly but then again today it stopped. I took the batteries out for three or four hours, put them back in and it has started again.

it’s very odd. Have you come across this stopping and starting before?

What a great thread this is. I am finding it interesting and learning many useful things. Thanks all. I too have experienced intermittent problems with my joystick Beo4 remote. It usually happens when replacing batteries too. I also have the BR1 but have always preferred the Beo4 remotes. In my case, I simply leave the new batteries in the remote for several days before trying again and somehow the remote starts functioning again. Very odd and seems completely illogical but that’s what happens this end. Hope you have some success going forward and thanks Guy particularly for some brilliant tips. Cheers, Simon.

B&O products are V1-32, BS2, H95, E8 and an Essence remote.
11-46 now replaced with Sony A90J 65”, Sony HT-A9, Sony UBP-X800M2 and Sony SRS-NS7.

The latest on the Beo4 remote - after a few weeks of it stopping and starting, I went to Audio Visual Services in Eastbourne (they do the installations for B&O in Hove, and installed my tv)

Turned out the board had gone. They replaced it while I waited, and £72 later all is well. Very nice people and I can’t recommend them highly enough.

The next problem is the Beosound 2. Can I link it to my laptop? Have a guess...
