It is time to replace my old AV7000 surround unit, but there is no way I am getting beosystem 3 for the current price/feature set.
This is my scenario:
The video is routed to the projector via a HDMI switch box - I don't need video processing/scaling - if the source does does not have HDMI, it probably would look terrible on a 150" screen anyway. The A7000 is processing the surround sound and everything is controlled via Beo4/Lintronic.
I have BL1 in the front and BL4000 in the back. the center will need to be replaced too as it is passive.
So, should I replace with a used beosystem 1 and a BL7-4 or is there a better recommendation for this as I already have the video part and the remote control dealt with? It seems like a lot of people who only need sound processing are going 3rd party - Rotel etc..
Thanks for your input!
Hi CheapB,
both BS0 (the AV7000) and BS1 are analog based surround systems. Not even the digital coax-in of the BS1 would make things better than the AV7000, since you can't transport PCM 5.1-sound over digital coax.
For an upgrade to proper 5.1-surroundsound you need a system with HDMI. That means either a BS3 or some kind of 3.party soundprocessor - could be a Rotel.
If you go that route, I am sure you can get lots of infos/inspiration how to connect your speakers and how to control it with a Beo4.
It would be much easier to choose the BS3 - or maybe wait untill a BS4 from B&O arrives

There is a tv - and there is a BV

Thanks for the response! That makes a lot of sense, however my biggest problem is the center channel. AV7000 is prologic based and because of that and the fact AV7000 has a 50w amp and is using a passive speaker the center is very weak. I have the exact same center channel on a DD5.1 system in the basement and it sound fine. I was making the assumption that upgrading to BS1 with DD5.1 and a BL7-4 would solve the center channel problem?
70% of our movie watching is via Netflix and the best they do is DD5.1 anyway.
So one way of looking at this would be to get the BS1 and the BL7-4 now and then assess if it makes sense to upgrade to BS4 when it comes out? Or alternatively abandon B&O all together expect the speakers and beo4?
A BS1 and the BL7-4 would in your case make sense.
As I read 'projector' I immediaitely thought of Bluray-discs
But with Netflix as it is now, the BS1 might be a good solution.
I suppose you plan to hook the sound up to the BS1 via the digital coax?
The AV7000 and the BS1 was only sold in North-America.
How much would a secondhand BS1 cost?

The remaining 30% is in fact BluRay :-) however netflix on PS3 is pretty good - especially with their "Super HD" format.
BS1 has 4 Coax and optical connections, which I would be using ( http://www.beoworld.org/prod_details.asp?pid=960 ). I only have 3 sources - cablebox, PS3 for nexflix and a dedicated Bluray player, so I should be ok. The HDMI switching is already in place and controlled by lintronic.
the BS1 typically goes for around $300, but sometimes you can get them for substantially less as there is not a big market for these. A typical US-based B&O customer wants the integrated experience that only BS3 or at TV with build in surround can give without a fair amount of geeking around :-)
If you do get a BeoSystem 1, I would recommend having the code converter database on it updated. It does a nice job controlling Apple TV, most blu-ray players, and cable/satellite boxes. While your lintronic setup can do this, it just works more elegantly with the BeoSystem 1. Also, Monster makes an hdmi switcher than can learn the IR commands coming from the BeoSystem 1 that were intended to control the Zektor switch box.

Thanks Jeff.
Do you have the model # of the Monster switch by any chance? is this the one: http://www.amazon.com/Monster-High-Speed-Three-Way-HDMI-Switch/dp/B00157DOF0
Also is the code converter database database something I can update myself or does it require a visit to the service center?
and finally: does it follow the SW version I believe version 5.1 is the latest. Is this separate or the same update?

Actually there are 4, but some of them have been there for months due to high prices.. I have read there is a difference between the mk1 and mk2 versions when it comes to video processing, but is there any difference in the audio processing? eg any reason to stay away from mk1?
I just purchased a beosystem 1 off Ebay to replace my AV7000 – looking forward to receive it. It will be setup together with my Beomaster 7000, Beogram CD 7000, PS3 and TV STB.
The BS1 will be used to route the audio and the video will run via HDMI directly to the projector. The PS3, STB and the HDMI switch will be controlled via Lintronic.
I am planning on using a Beolink active 1616 between the BM7000 and BS1 without the IR eye with BS1 in option 2 and BM7000 in Option 0.
The IR eye is connected to the Lintronic box, which have IR out that will go to the BS1
Does this make sense?
I have attached a simple drawing of most of the system components:

Got it all setup except, I decided I will get a new Center channel instead of putting an amp on the old one I used with the AV7000, so I am using my BL4000 that normally are real speakers as center for now. this is a great upgrade from AV7000 and is highly recommended I paid lesst than $200. Now I just need to find that Beolab 10 or 7-4....
I'm very interested in your progress, it actually would make sense for me to do this. I had an AV7000 setup with my BS9000, but a couple of years ago I severed the audio and video systems and went with a HK receiver for AV.
Couple of questions, how do you manage not seeing the on screen displays from the BS1? I have a plasma that can handle its own video switching, and a Logitech Harmony 1 that can handle B&O codes, do you find you need to see the BS1 info?
Secondly, how does the system sound on music? Does the sub integrate as well on music as for movies? How about setup, do you need to use an SPL meter or does it auto setup like most modern gear?
Jeff
I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.
I have only used the new setup for a day, so my answers may not be as helpful as they could be..

I have always used the lintronic box to handle the 3rd party components, so the switch was really easy and so far I see no need to get into the on screen menu after the initial setup. I would think the Logitech setup would work the same way. in case I ever need it for change of setup etc I have a VGA cable running from the BS1 to the projector and the Projector has a split screen feature so I can see the source and the menu at the same time, but side-by-side.

I will need to get back you you regarding the music quality as I haven't had a chance to listen other than ensuring i had the basic setup in place. The setup is mostly manual. You enter which speaker models you have BL1, BL4000 etc and the distance to each of them and everything else is manual from there. It does have the white noise generator, so when I get my center speaker ( and I am thinking about replacing the sub) I will spent some time on calibration. I am initially planning on doing that by ear, but an SPL meter is < $30 so if I find that is needed, i'll live..
Your HK is likely doing a better job than 10 year old BS1 for a sound quality perspective, but going from AV7000 this is a great and affordable upgrade.
