Hi, does anyone know why there is a large hole that goes through the middle of the woofers magnet right up into the voice coil? I can see the interior of the dust cap through the hole. I am so curious about why it's there and what it does....

It's a "ventilated magnet" design.
Size, coil design, magnet strength, cone and surround material etc...
It's all done to achieve the T/S parameters needed for this speaker (also why it is impossible to find decent commonly available replacements).

Normally one would put a twist of foam inside the hole to prevent dust and debris getting in there. Don't push it in deep, just let it block the entrance.
There isn't a lot of room between the magnet pole piece and the voicecoil, so any debris getting in there would be disastrous.

Sorry it took so long to reply...  Thanks for the advice. I have just plugged the hole with foam careful not to contaminate it. will be ordering new surrounds for the speakers this week. Thanks again!
