Hi,
I have a rather annoying issue with my CD player in my Beosound Ouverture.
If I have pulled the AC plug and let the Ouverture rest I can play a CD. Sometimes a complete CD. but when I change to another CD it will not run. Not even spin it. Sometimes I can start a CD and it will run the first song but stop halfway through the next song. I can not start the CD or any CDs untill I have unplugged the AC and let it rest.
Is it a new Laser I need? Or is it something more drastic?
If I need to change the laser head which laser should I buy?
Which version do you have? The linear laser likes to do things like that. But is easy to replace.
The philips swing arm type is usually fine but there is a capacitor on the decoder board that usually fails and mimics a weak laser.
Pic?
The Ouverture is the model 2636
I noticed a new issue when pressing load. When the arm or holder of the cd swings open it seems like it wants to continue to open but the chassis of the Ouverture prevents this. So it keeps the motor running for a few seconds and the stops. There are not sprockets that are grinding teeth or anything like that. I will try and make a video and upload it. The picture you need is that of the disassembled CD-player?

Ok, you have the crappy modern laser. There are a few capacitors on the board behind it that MAY be leaking, but most of the time I just replace the pickup itself. They are cheap. Clones... but they work.
The entire CDM-12 is a self contained unit, easy to remove and service. You can try cleaning the lens, but I have found that once they act up it's USUALLY the pickup.
Fixed a ton of these.
As to the motor, either new belts from Martin, or clean the limit switch on the cam gear. Probably new belts. You should, once already apart to do the laser.
Incredible that for a high-end unit like the Ouverture they use crappy lasers...
but okay as long as they can be fixed. Do you happen to have item number? Or should I just google CDM-12?
I had to change the belt on the casette recorder and I think I ordered new belts for the CD as well.. two belts of different length. Round belts as I believe?
Do you have a link to this Martin?
And thanks for the help :-)
Can I upgrade the crappy laser to a better one? Or is the only choice the CDM-12?
Well, "I" call them crappy only in relation to the near legendary durable swing arm lasers. They last damn near forever, especially the CDM-1 on the old units. Glass optics and a quality NEVER to be repeated.
The modern 3 beam pickups are just cheaper to make and can be made far more compact. Which is likely why everyone switched to them.
As to a "better" upgrade? Nope.
I have several Overtures and Century's. I do prefer the swing arm pickups, but I have 2 of the linear one's and they work perfect after replacing the laser. The swing arms are long no longer available so you would be out of luck. But you can fix yours.
Martin "Dillen" on this site sells belts and kits. He is the go-to guy and I have bought from him. Ebay belts do not work right.
thank you for your reply.
Just to be completly sure, is this the only thing I need? beside the belts?

MOST of the time, yes. But it IS possible that the decoder board may have a bad surface mount capacitor or two. I would NOT do this without being familiar with laser replacement. You can kill the pickup very easily with just static electricity.
There ARE tutorials for this, though. In any case, worst is you have a spare laser if the mechanism just needed a few caps. There are also people that rebuild them for you.
