Beosound 1 - portable cd/radio player - cd player works but sometimes plays slow

I was lucky enough to find someone giving away a Beosound 1 cd player which also came with a perfect Beo4 remote - it was free cause it would turn off after a minute or so of use - the seller had the password but it still didn't work for her so she gave it away.

I fixed the shutoff issue - as the seller said the unit would not accept the password (would never get to the stage for asking for it), so I did a reset (followed the instruction manual) and after that it asked for it and worked perfect then.

I have been using it for a few weeks now and did find another issue though.  When you first turn it on and play a cd it sounds/plays great but after 15 mins or so it starts to play slow and distorted.  Once it does this it continues until it has been turned off for 15+ minutes and then plays fine again.  When it is in the slow stage it is obvious that the cd is not turning as fast.

Any ideas what to look at?
