Hi guys,
Following that thread: https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/p/29572/327486.aspx#327486
I'm trying to bring a pristine Beosound 6 to life.As far as I know the device should be seen if not as a mass storage, at least as unknown device on system report utilities whatever the platform.
Here is where I am:Tried on recent mac -> nothing.Tried on old Mac (32 bits) -> nothing.Tried on old PC (XP - 32 bits) -> nothing.
Checked the cable, looks OK, fully wired and the very same the cables currently sold (on ebay still).
Have reset the device as service manual says -> nothing (in XP device manager)Tried with Beoport software on XP32 -> nothing.
So
can someone with a Beosound 6 tell me the behavior of the unit when plugged raw to whatever computer.I believe it should show up as mass storage or at least appears in "Device Manager" on WIN or "system report" on Mac.
Appart from that the unit is working well, play, settings, screen, charging. So I believe I'm missing a little thing.
I don't have the CD or drivers but again, even without that it should appears as connected one way or the other, right ?
Hope you can help, it's a beautiful thing even if not much loved after what I read about it.
Thanks.
It astonishes me why anyone would bother with a product like this anymore...
Because it is in good condition and I hate to throw away things that are still meant to work.
And also because people sometimes bother with products like these and with time they become part of any little history.
madskp:Hope this will help
Thank you madskp,
Will try tomorrow.
Yes I did. It did restart the unit, the screen showed "beosound 6 - starting up" but then nothing happened.
I'm really concerned about the cable, but with no means of checking it more than I did (wiring, continuity…)

Did you try to clean the connection socket for the data / charging cable on the player? Best done with clean high pressured air. It's a rebranded Samsung YP-Z5, maybe you can try another cable and/or a new battery for your B&O beauty.
Good afternonn TWG,
The problem about the cable is that the one I have looks to be fully wired (see picture) and the ones sold around are phisically the same (connector, socket, wire guide) so I doubt it will change anything.
The battery looks good because is doead charge and it does hold the charge enough to play music (the music already in the device).
Nevertheless i'll try to clean the contacts while trying the Madskp advice.
I wonder if it could be anything in the BS6 that prevent it from working with generic cables. The original B&O connector seems to be very large and may have something in it ?
madskp:In device manager on Windows try to extend the USB devices and see if something new shows up there when you plug it in. Could that an USB device is registered but not a mass storage device. Another place to look is in control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management -> storage -> disk managment Maybe the disk will show up there if its not partitionated or formatted. Hope this will help

Unfortunately neither of those solution did solve the problem, the Beosound 6 is still invisible
Good morning guys,
Well the problem was just in front of me and now I know it is obvious…
One pin of the socket (the green one: Data) was recessed into the connector preventing any communication.
I put the pin back in place and now the Beosound 6 mounts on the desktop as would any mass storage.Just copy files into the music folder and they ca be played on the device.
Two minor issues thought, certainly because I'm on Mac:
- Artwork doesn't shows up.- An "unknown" artist appears with song files doubles from the one I've copied ans that freeze the unit when played.
Happy Guy here!
Great that you found the cause and it's working again!MACs leave files in the format "_xxxxx.xxx" in folders which should be invisible to the user. But when you copy files from a Mac to any other device, these "ghost files" (I don't know their real name and purpose) are copied, too and this might disturb your MP3 player. On a windows desktop you can see those files when using any memory that was used before with a MAC. Have a look at your device with a standard file explorer if those files are visible on your device and delete them. The MP3 player doesn't need it, it only needs the "real" files. Maybe that helps.
Thanks TWG.
The thing is that being a Mac guy, those files are invisible when exploring them… from a Mac.And even if I can setup virtual machines or use a special PC I have for Beo6 programming, it would not be a convenient solution for daily use.
There is a freeware called XNJB that usually act as the missing link for deprecated MP3 players, but it dont recognize the player.
Anyway even if it's not clean as "clean", so far its totally bearable. I'm more concerned aboute the artwork issue, but will investigate and report.
Thank you for your interest.
A little update:
As TWG pointed out, the "unknown" album is from the "dot-underscore" files created by MacOS. They need to be removed from a window machine to clear the album entry.
The artwork issue along with a another issue the did appear that is some albums not being recognized are all caused by the ID3 tag version.Looks like the Beosound 6 won't accept ID3 tags V2.4. Reverting all tags to V2.3 with mp3Tag did solve the problem for all files.
"You think we can slap some oak on this thing?"
Hi Leo, I will do!
The sound is good. I mean I'm not that expert when it comes to evaluate sound quality but it doesn't sound "obviously" less good than the players I'm used to listen to (iPods, and iPhones).
For all my test I'm using a Sennheiser PX100 IIi but I've also tried it with the earset 3i. But I must say the later ones dont fit my ears very well. And because I also have a Beosound 2 but only one pair of earset, I thought the Beosound 6 would fit better with a Form 2 should I really want to use it daily!

Thank you CB,
I was heard about that shortcut but was unable to find it again, so thank you.
But there is something weird still: if I delete the dot-underscore files from a Mac (I use Onyx to make the invisible files appear), the "unknown" album is still there in the Beosound. When I delete them from the windows explorer, the album disappear.
leosgonewild:I had a Beosound 2, but I never managed to get it to work with my Mac. Eventually gave up
Setting the Beosound 2 in iTunes mode and clicking the GO button for 2 secondes when the unit is docked makes it mount flawlessly even on recent OSX.But nowadays when modern Mac have all SDcard slots working directly on the card is obviously a simpler and faster way.
leosgonewild:How about some photo documentation of your pretty little thing?
