I bought a Beomaster 5000 on eBay because I was watching too many repair videos on YouTube.  I have a moderate amount of experience fixing iPods, laptops, iMacs, and various other computers and the occasional piece of AV equipment.  Wow, just wow.  I was not prepared for how complex the inside of the Beomaster 5000 was.  Serviceable and yet intimidating at the same time.  Whole boards in the Beomaster have been reduced to a single chip in today's tech.

The first unit that I received had so many issues that I bought a second one for parts that in fact worked far better than the first.  The original had a non-functioning CPU board and power issues across the unit, a burned up chip where the TDA1074A should be, and other individual components that either were cooked or leaking.  After swapping (many) parts out with the second unit I have a mostly functioning hybrid, except for a couple issues.  I also bought a spare CPU board in case I needed it, but haven't so far.

I had a few questions related to the issues I'm facing now:

1. First, speaker 1 does not work although speaker 2 does.  The muting relay looks to be in good condition, but I can't get sound from the system on speaker 1.  Any suggestions on tracking down the issue?

2. I get a "No Transmission" on the Master Control Panel and the system doesn't respond to commands.  The MCP is sending IR as I observed it with my phone's camera, but the Beomaster doesn't receive or respond.  I swapped out the Beomaster's IR board for a second one, and still no luck.  I tried a second functioning CPU board since it connects directly to the IR board.  So I basically tested two CPU boards (both worked) and two IR boards (neither would respond).  Any ideas of the cause?

3. Should I just re-cap the whole unit?  Will this solve these issues?  Is this risky?  I have quite a bit of soldering experience but have never re-capped anything before.  I saw this kit, is it worth buying it?  https://www.audio-high-store.com/product/bang-and-olufsen-beomaster-5000-upgrade-kit-audio-capacitors/

Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

1. You cannot see if the relay is working.
If it's the original relay - replace it on sight.
New relays here www.beoparts-shop.com

2. Correct MCP?   5000 - not 5500?
If correct, check supply voltages to the front panel IR board.

3. I suggest you wait until the causes of the current issues are found.
The risk of introducing more problems is to high and diagnosing could be more difficult.

Thank you - I'll replace the relay first.

The MCP is the correct one, I'll check the supply voltage.

And thanks for the reco on the capacitors, that perspective definitely helps.  I'll hold off until I have everything else working.

Just checked the IR board and there's no 34V coming through at all, tracked it back to the power board so I'm suspecting there's a bad diode on it.  Going to replace and see if it does the trick.  I have a replacement relay too that I'll replace at the same time.

Just wanted to close this thread out - I replaced both the relays and the resistor to the 34V line, and it fixed both my issues.  MCP works flawlessly and all speakers are working.

I'm pondering recapping at some point, but just going to enjoy the system for the time being!
