Hello dear Beo Community, i just got me a pair of Penta's. I still have to do the usual restaurations like renewing the foam surrounds and changing the capacitors. I also found that one midrange speaker has blown. It reads infinite ohms on the meter. If anyone has a spare, i will gladly buy it from you. My main concern though is that the top and bottom midrange speaker dont give out sound. The middle two play perfectly fine. I checked the crossover boards but i couldnt find anything off, as they look in perfect condition. Is this a usual issue and what could the issue be ? Both speakers have the same fault and on one obviously one of the mids is blown. All the other mids read around 3 - 3.2 ohm
Ok, i managed to fix my "blown" midrange driver myself. Under the glue where the coil meets cable, i found that there was no connection at all, they might have barely touched. I wonder if this was ever working...wow bang and olufsen just wow... After reconing (i had to take it apart completely) and putting everything back together it did seem like a very cheap midrange driver. Anyway...
I also found out that the top and bottom mids are playing a different frequencies than the ones in the middle. I just had to turn the music much louder and cover the tweeter and the middle two mids to hear the outer two mids.
So for now i just have to refoam and maybe change the capacitors. Does anyone know which caps are best suited for the Penta's ? Or are the ones from Beo-Parts best suited ?
I would love to know if there are any more modding tips for the Penta.
Hi Andreas, I just went through this so can relate.
Firstly, good catch on the tinsel wire disconnect. The 4 midranges are designed to not play the same frequencies. As you have found, the inner pair have a higher frequency cutoff.
Secondly, i used the beoparts kit with complete success. There are at least two or three iterations of crossover design in the Pentas. The kits are for every one except the early series 1 Penta. Beoparts will set you straight on this. There are more elaborate ways and means involving polypropelene caps etc. but i read where its a lot of work. The Beoparts kit seems designed to return the design to factory specs. I will say that everything about the sound tightens up after crossover recap. The bass is no longer monotonic, mids and highs become more refined. My Beoparts amp kits are still in the mail, so that can only improve things further when i get that done.
Hope this helps.
Ps. Read everything you can find on this forum written by "Dillen". He is wealth of good information and was involved in the design of the Beoparts Penta kits I believe.
Hi Kiwi, thanks for the info's !
I got Dillen's capacitor kit, i am very happy how the Penta's sound right now. What would we do without him :)
