I just got my hands on a Beogram 5000 extremely cheap with a Beomaster 5000, Beocord 5000 and a Beogram CD 7000. Everything works perfectly - except the turntable that wont' play.

The platter can turn - it does so when I press the "cue" button. But when I press "Play" nothing happens.

Does anyone have ideas to what the problem can be? (and how that could be fixed)

It's probably an issue with the switch behind the front panel - it's a small, flexible metal membrane switch on a small PCB and these can give issues.

I had one once where the normally dome-shaped actuator had slipped from its location and so made random, intermittent contact which meant that the deck would start happily but would randomly switch itself off when it felt like it (and then sometimes even switch straight back on again!).

But if it is a problem with this switch, wouldn't I be able to start the turntable from the Beomaster 5000 it is hooked up to? Nothing happens when I press Phono on the Beomaster.

Ah, you didn’t mention that! In that case, yes, it’s likely something else.
