Am I the only one to experience a less boomy M5 sound image?

It seems like it has become much rounder, and far closer to the traditional B&O signature sound.

I discovered it completely by chance while listening to radio: treble and midrange are much better balanced.

I have had a difficult relationship with my M5 as I haven't quite found its sound profile to my liking.

Without fiddling or changing anything, it now sounds close to my Beolab 12-3s, 17s and 4000s.

I would even compare it to the clarity delivered by the BeoSound 1. Ive always found the M5 profile too muddled, and preferred the M3. Now it seems just right!

Does anybody know anything?

Am I alone with this experience? Is it due to a software update?

(Oh, one more thing – the ticking noise when turning volume up and down has changed somewhat, too, like it is clearer and louder.)

I agree.

I’ve noticed it a couple of days ago - just after I’ve installed the latest beta version (3.11...) of the Bang and Olufsen app.

The sound is more precise/less boomy, and the volume change ticking has changed too.

Let’s hope it stays that way Smile.

Best regards - Dyssegaard

Sounds like a proper Beosound now.

Glad I’m not the only one to notice!

Yes, I noted that change as well.

I wish I could say the same.

The only place I can use my M5 is when it’s on the concrete floor of my workshop. Even then, despite being on the “brightest” settings it is tiring to listen to after a while.

I am still on firmware 1 .24.xxx so perhaps an update will help.

Interesting. All of mine are still on 1.24. I look forward to the update, as they are definitely “boomy” and would benefit from some tightening up of the bass.

For the first time ever I have found myself actually putting on music to listen to it on the speaker. Look out for the update and let us know.

I confirm it is less boomy after the upgrade, nicer sound now! But why did they change the upper disc click sound for a so loud one ???

I think it has to do with equalisation. The click is now both louder and brighter, but that counts for treble and mid range overall.

I think they gave a substantial part of the higher frequency range a significant notch upwards to match the bass.

Volume level has changed too. Mine´s default volume was 20, I had to reduce it to 17 to get the same perceived volume level than prior to the update.

I also find the volume increment quite big when using the M5 top disc

Not to derail this thread, but my BeoSound 2 has recently started having an issue where it will suddenly stop playing and be unavailable for a few minutes. I just checked and it has the new software.

Keep us posted.  Maybe start a new thread.  I see an upgrade is waiting for my BS2, but I'm now hesitant to follow through.
