What would be the preferred speakers to pair up with a Beosystem 6500 including what was typically recommended by the dealers?

Penta’s, 4000’s, 6000’s, 8000’s.

But why stick to those, when you nowadays have way more choices.

If you mean passive speakers - well, again any from that period or infact any passive speaker.

Do remember - speakers and how they perform are to a great deal dependent on your room (and what you expect/like).

Thanks for picking up on this thread Millemissen! Reason for asking is that I was looking in the catalogue from 1989 when the 6500 system was introduced as I was curious to see if they would be pictured with speakers which they weren't. In way I'm might be more into  passive speakers to actually fully utilise the Beomaster 6500 amplifier and I'm keeping the system in my office which is quite small and only 3x3 meters - so smaller passive speakers with focus on being able to play low/medium volume with clarity (so not looking for nightclub volume Big Smile). Music wise I mostly listen to mainstream music (except rock) including classic music including electronic music.

The obvious choice will be CX100  with BeoVox Cona for a small room. But I will look for a pair of S45.2. I have both setups (using beomaster 5500/7000) and the S45.2 has in my opinion the best sound with low/medium volume.

In that case the CX100 would be suited I think.

However, if they are direct at your desk/in front of you, you might concider some non-B&O speakers - more in the category of studio monitors.

There are a lot good, small passive speakers on the market nowadays.

I have had a pair of the Audioengine A5’s for a long time - now with a BM6500 - on my desktop (not much used, I must confess).

If you should think of going active, how about a pair of the small Genelecs?

I guess it also depends on how much time you sit there/listen there.

Haven't decided really on speakers yet but getting to the point that the BS6000 is getting ready to use since I'm starting to get ready with my refurbishing project. I really like the looks of the CX100 and looking around it's quite easy to find them to a fair price both renovated and none renovated. Main concern with the refoamed once that seems to pop up for sale once a while is to what extend they're to stiff and to what extend they audio character has changed. Se several warning in this forum to make use of various sources of refoaming kit.

Currently I've borrowed a pair of Dali Concept 1 to be able to test the BM6500 and the Dali sounds so so. Can't say that I've been looking at speakers for the last 20 years.... so how well does a pair CX100 with modern speakers? Alternatively I've been looking at BW 607/606 including Dali Menuet. The S45.2 I find will be too big for the room and would look a bit crammed. The idea is to keep the speakers on each side of the desk on the floor angled slightly upwards (desk is small so no room for speakers). The Audioengine A5 is a good size on the acceptable level (that's also the reason why I like the CX100 - the size).

I could of course go with CX100 to maintain the B&O order in the room or I go with something else if the CX100 isn't really up for it. What I'm looking for is small speakers with enough power to fill the 3x3m room and be sound neutral. Would you still recommend the CX100?

So managed to borrow a pair of CX100 to compare  with the Dali Concept 1 (entry level speaker) and the volume was slightly lower from the CX100 compared to the C1 speakers and as well sound a bit more flat and missing the high frequencies as well which was more clear on the C1. Is this the general impression of the CX100 or was I just unlucky with this pair which also have been refoamed?

Beovox CX100 can sound sterile and life-less. That seems to be modern.
If you want to listen to a warmer and more pleasant sound (rather than looking at nice numbers on specs sheets) and stay with smaller cabinets, you could
try going back to Beovox 1700/1702 or 2702 depending on room - perhaps even Beovox 1100 - though you shouldn't max the Beomasters volume with any of those, and most you will find will be in need of fresh capacitors before you compare.

Thanks for the input Martin. I was actually very disappointed with how the speakers performed and using the wording that you used - sterile and life-less - and lack of warmness kind of throw me off since I actually expected the opposite. Martin would you say then that the CX100 colours the audio less and acts maybe more as monitor speakers?

Thanks for the suggestions of the other Beovox; going to look into them and read up on reviews on them. Only problem is that the CX100 has quite high wife approval factor. At least she is a big B&O fan as well; so can't complaint too much Smile

I realise that I just tested the speakers the wrong way... so error 40. Meaning having various BL around in the house I got used to that they're placed in the right height and when testing the speakers on the below picture I kept them on the floor.... So the CX100 came out quite mediocre were the Dali came out fairly alright (but still far from good), so aware that keeping these small speakers on the floor is far from the best listening position. So got a friendly reminder when I spoke with the local hifi speaker shop to schedule time to come in to listening to something else (BW 607/707 S2 and Dali Menuet) who quickly pointed out my mistake when I described my requirement for speakers size and placement. So with that said I moved up the speakers to window niche and what a difference it did for the both of the speakers. Well, first of all the Dali sounded like really bad when playing tracks with complex melody and a lot of instruments. Well, actually it did sound overall bad. So how did the CX100 come out? Well, now it sounds really really well much more tight and neutral but now I could hear everything! So can only agree no when testing them in a proper way that they come out really great. So if I compare with my listening session with the BW; the BW 607 I didn't like they're add a lot of colouring and when the music gets busy the fall through. Here the 707 was far more tight and neutral and to be honest - the kind of reminded me a lot of the CX100. So I'm sticking to a pair of CX100 and going to add a Beovox Cona as well to see how that plays out.
