Hi there,

I just bought a used Beocord 5500 deck that was supposed to be fully serviced with new belts fitted.

When it arrived and I first plugged it in everything appeared to be working except the drawer was not opening and closing, making a clicking noise.

There was a sticker on the case from the seller saying that guarantee was voided if broken.  Rightly or wrongly I decided to take a chance and opened the case hoping it was something simple that had come loose in the post.  Fortunately this was the case (the rubber belt at the bottom that goes round the pulley wheels had come off) and I was able to pop it back on and the drawer now works properly.  That was last night.

Today I've just tried playing a tape in the reverse direction and it's only coming out on the left channel.  Definitely all tapes.  Other direction sounds absolutely fine.  It seems that some kind of signal is getting to the amp because if I switch to Mono R there's some loud hiss.

I'm wondering if they now refuse to take it back how I could fix it.  Hopefully they will but I won't know until Monday I guess.  I saw another post describing azimuth alignment as a possible cause but I'm not sure I have the tools.  I've fixed amplifiers before and can solder, but I'm not sure I really fancy taking this on.

Incidentally, this is not an implicit criticism of the seller - just a description of what's happened.

Kevin.

Could be one of the thin leads at the tapehead broken inside, only contacting in certain positions.

Hi Martin,

Is that something I could have broken whilst getting to the pulley for the drawer?  I didn't really have to interfere with the transport area, IIRC and I was pretty careful.

Also, is that a difficult repair - or one somebody with good soldering skills could accomplish?

These are the wires, I assume?

How do I get to test them?

Measure the DC resistance of the coils in the tapehead in both directions (unpowered).
if any difference is noted replace the tapehead and do a complete realign of the deck.

At the moment I have 6 fine wires coming from the head to a small pcb in the bottom left of my picture.

Black & White - 4 ohms both ways

Yellow & Blue - 212 ohms both ways

Brown & Red - 218 ohms forward, O/C in reverse.

So I guess that means Brown and Red is the right channel and one of those wires is possibly fractured?

If I move the head to see if I can repair the wire, that would mean I'd have to realign the head when I put it back anyway, right?

Which I'm not sure I know how to do.

Both channels in both directions are now working - it was the red lead to the head that had fractured.

However, now the deck sounds very muffled, so I suppose it's out of alignment.

Could you tell me which screws adjust the alignment?  Are they the top two 'slotted' ones with red lacquer applied?

I suggest you refer to the servicemanual. It shows the correct procedure.
