LG is now pushing ads to its TVs

Another really good reason to buy an AppleTV 4K.  With TV purchases these days, YOU are becoming the product and is the big reason I hate onboard Apps.  As you say, a very sad day. With most TV technology so far we've been able to skip ads, so they needed to find other ways to monetize. I think the Netflix, Amazon, Disney and Apple models are the only way forward for quality content.  It does kill me how much Sky charges per month, but we're paying for all those expensive Footballers and F1 drivers big houses and private jets. The Sky model makes no sense to me. I've managed to bring down my monthly fee a lot, but nowhere near the £10-15 we should really be paying. If F1 becomes available through another source other than Sky, that is gone!

 

Oh for the day we can pay for only Sky Sports (HD) through a box.

Not sure if Sky's cheaper Now TV is an option, as I think its still only 720P, and will be years (if ever) before Now offers UHD sports.

I'd happily pay 30 per month for just the various Sky Sports (and Eurosport) channels.

I only continue with Sky because I haggle and get my 70/75 full price package down to just over 50 per month.

LG's adverts are a horrible move, but I guess they can be ignored if you rely on an Apple TV I guess.

The story from the Verge is that an ad came when he was in the update menu of his LG CX TV, so even if you're using an Apple TV as a source, you'll be tempted to update your LG from time to time and have to experience this kind of very bad user experience, completely annoying if you consider that you've put €10K on your TV...

I'm also a big fan of the Apple TV and use it on my good old BV8 40. I would appreciate that dumb TVs (without any kind of smart stuff that quickly becomes outdated because of a lack of support from the TV manufacturer) would still be a choice but nowadays it's either smart TV or a monitor.

The normal NowTV setting is just 720p, although you can get 'NowTV Boost' for an extra £3 that should give you 'full 1080p' - I am not sure whether that applies to all coverage.

Now TV's Sky Sports pass is currently £33.99 per month.  There was a '£25 per month for first three months' offer that has just ended.

Personally I am not too fussed about 720p (on my BV6-26!) but begrudge paying for all the SkySports channels when I just want F1.  I was going to look at the F1 TV Pro app (in conjunction with a VPN) for this season, but apparently it is quite buggy.

Fingers crossed that NowTV do some sort of 'F1 pass' like they did a couple of years ago for about £200 for the nine month season.

 

If I ever replace my BV14 with an LG screen you can be pretty sure that I'm going to block certain IP rages in my firewall in order to filter out stuff like that.

Anyway... It could be worse. In the ages where Philips was still selling their own TVs they had a patent where you were not able to change the channel if commercials were played... It (luckily) never commercialised though.

When I installed my mk2 eclipse my screen asked while being setup if I accepted certain agreements. Some necessary for it to work but ads could be turned off. So I did.

But nonetheless it’s worth noting how much data is collected and reported back about user behavior and how the companies may use it pretty freely after the consumer has to accept or deny a very long agreement letter (I several times tried to read it but the screensaver kicked in every time and throw me to the top of the letter making it very hard to even read).

Hopefully I won’t see any ads even while updating apps but as for now I haven’t seen it.

Sky has just put it's prices up AGAIN. Worse, 'HD' has gone up a further £1/month. Why on earth do we have to pay a further fee to receive 'HD' content in 2021?

I remember this was a 'a thing' when HD was new and I was keen to get the best picture, so paying an extra fee seemed justified. Almost 10 years later they still have an additional fee to receive channels in HD. In fact, it's more than my Amazon Prime subscription fee.

In addition, BT Sport through the Apple TV results in a better picture - albeit marginally - than 4K Sky Sports. You wonder why they need a dish in 2021. Indeed, when I was supposed to move to the US this time last year (another story for another day!), I ditched Sky and watched everything through NowTV on the Apple TV, in HD.

Who even needs a Sky dish? I'm moving to a brand new build (Cubis, Bruton) on Thursday and it has both FTTP and a Sky Q dish installed. With FTTP why do I need a dish? Perplexing. I guess Sky pay developers to install a dish knowing people are likely to use it if it's there.
