I have a Beosound 3500 connected by Master link which fails to respond to control to switch on! I can however check that MCL is set by using the Menu 0 4 command and see MCL SEL displayed?
i also have another speaker set in the kitchen breakfast room which also doesn’t respond!
i Have tried the BEO4 on my main system a Beosound 5 system and the remote will switch on and control it!
Any ideas as to what has gone wrong?
"You think we can slap some oak on this thing?"
? Did this suddently appear/was it previously working - did you make any changes to the setup lately - who installed the ML connection/cable (you?) ?

If you see MCL is set then that is probably the issue because you say you are connected by MasterLink (ML) and not MasterConrolLink (MCL).
Millemissen is correct asking if it worked before and have you changed anything. That will help us suggest solutions.

Hi,
Sorry for delay in response! It’s been a strange one really, I noticed one day that the Beosound Speaker wasn’t displaying the time and discovered that neither it or the speaker in the kitchen world!
Strangely the speaker started to display the time again and I was able to activate it and the other remote speaker. It then stopped displaying the time again! In the meantime I had to switch off my main system and take it off the wall as I was decorating and when reinstalled the Beosound 3500 still was not displaying the time. However, after a few days it did again and it was at this point that I tried to switch it on with the remote to avail!
I have not changed anything in cables etc which were all installed some 15 years ago with a system upgrade to the Beosound 5 system some 6 years ago!
I have tried again to get the Beosound 3500 to display MCL but when I follow the instructions
press Red, menu, 0, 4 go the speaker goes into some form of timer set up?
So, could you remind me of the command on the Beo4 remote to check and set MCL again. I also managed not sure how to ensure that the Beosound 3500 was set to opt 6, that correct?
Opt is set to 6
Hi Stoobie,
my bad I think it’s Master Control link that I am connected via. It’s a cable from the main system plugged into the back of the Beosound 3500 and the other speaker.
Hi SteveieK,Sorry for the delay in replying but I have had to think about this. I assume your speaker is a BeoLab 3500. There is not a BeoSound 3500 but there is a BeoSound 35. From your description it sounds like they are Beolab 3500’s (BL3500). Also, if it is connected to your BeoSound 5 (BS5), then it is almost certainly MasterLink (ML) NOT MCL. BS5 does not have MCL. I wonder if you somehow set it to MCL when you were trying to sort out the clock issue. But that does not account for both of them stopping working at the same time.To get more help from others you might want to change the post title to Unable to get BeoLab 3500 to respond. More people may see it and try to help.Something to try first is disconnect/unplug the entire system from the power. You may have left the BL3500’s powered on when you disconnected the BS 5 and this can confuse the MasterLink system when you power back on the BS5. Discconect/unplug the BS5 at the wall and also each BL3500 and leave for a few minutes. Reconnect/plug in the BS5 first, wait a few minutes then reconnect/plug in each BL3500 this should reset the ML system (and hopefully reset the BL3500 to ML mode). The clock will take a few minutes to show on the BL3500. Try to operate them as you used to. If this does not help you might have accidentally set a timer when you pressed Red, menu, 0, 4, go because that is the sequence to set a timer. (To check the MCL status is Red, menu, menu (second time), 0, 4 go). If you have set a timer by mistake you can cancel the Timer Play function by using buttons on the BL3500. On BL3500, touch the TIMER key and you will see the current Timer setting in the display (if there is one). While the current setting is displayed, touch the TIMER key again to change the function from Timer On (timer play) to No Timer (no timer play), or vice versa. If that does not help let us know and we can try other suggestions. Just to help us further, your BS5 is in one room and you have 2 BL3500s. One in the Kitchen but where is the other? Do you have anything else connected to the BS5?Stoobie
Even if nothing was changed with the cabling - as SteveieK writes - I’d definitely go looking for these....means the junction box/es.
It might be that taking the BL3500 off the wall/unplugging it has caused a pull to the ML cable........hard to say, if you don’t know how the cabling was done and where they (and the junction box/es) are located.
@SteveieK How many link products/BL3500’s are there in the setup?
Hi Both Stoobie and Millemissen
Really appreciate your input, as I said before this is a really strange one! I have not changed anything apart from maybe the Beo4 tp Beolab 3500 settings
It used to work fine then the time just disappeared from the screen on the Beolab 3500. So I switched everything off disconnected all the cables and did a unit by unit restart. Nothing happened then a sometime later the clock reappeared and I could listen to music again through the Beolab 3500 and the Beolab 2000 in another room.
however after sometime the clock disappeared again from the BeoLab 3500! I recently decorated the room that the Beosound 5 is in and I removed it from the wall disconnected all cables and shut down the main Beomaster 5, once I reinstalled the Beo5 and master I switched back on the Beo 3500/2000 speakers but nothing works!
I have visibly checked all the ML cables some of which run outside the house and they look fine, plus remember it has worked in between problems!
So, I left with perhaps checking the Beolab 3500 ML settings (don’t know how) is that a command on the Beo4 remote? Finally I guess the final action will be having someone checking the end to end of the ML cable to check integrity, any ideas of an indie to do this near Reading?
Hopefully I’ve answered the various queries and maybe just maybe one of you will have a brainwave for me!
Cheers
Steve
I think this sounds like cable issues as Millemissen suggests because it is unusual for all link speakers to stop working at the same time.
To check the ML/MCL on the BL3500 is red dot, menu, menu, 0, 4, go. I believe to change from MCL to ML (or vice versa) is red dot, menu, menu, 0, 2, go and use up/down arrow to change.
Usually when you activate a BL3500/BL2000 in a link room you have to press LIST and have LINK in the screen before pressing the button to play the speaker. Did you have to do this before? Try that.
if you mixed up the option settings when trying to sort out the clock issue that will also cause problems.
Often this tool is/was used to check the integraty of a ML installation.
Some dealers/technicians might still have it.
Maybe you could borrow one for a couple of days from a dealer.
Hi both,
Just carried out a complete shutdown/disconnect as suggested. Main system back up, but nothing on the ML speakers! When I try the red dot menu 02 go the Beo3500 says No ML which really does suggest a cable issue!
I will see if my kind local B&O dealer has the cable tester and will allow me to borrow it, not holding my breath but will try nonetheless!
To you other point Stoobie I think all I ever did to switch on was use the 🔴 and then again 🔴 to switch off!
Thanks for your help so far 👍
Hi Chaps,
Quick update I have now located the junction boxes and found one that has corroded cables, so problem located just need to install the new box when it arrives.
Thanks for your help.
Regards Steve
That sounds very promising. Good luck.
You probably have identified the problem. I have two Beolab 3500 running off a Beocenter 2. However, I abandoned the official B&O junction boxes and used a block of standard electrical 5amp connectors, simply because I could get better connections with the screws rather than with the tight and fiddly B&O push fit connection boxes. Something to think about as an alternative.
Graham
Hi Graham,
Funny enough that thought crossed my mind too! I have a “official” box on order as the junction box is outside but I have noted how fiddly and small the cables and connectors look, I expect it to be a bit of a challenge!
Hopefully your B&O junction box comes with the tool to press the wires in properly.
I use a mixture of B&O boxes and the connectors as Graham suggested. All works for me. I have one of these which has really simplified things as my system grows.

As you have read, that was my main thought for finding out where things went wrong.
I have seen that often!
Having done tons of ML setups over the years, I know that junction boxes can be fiddly.....you have to be carefull.
However, it first becomes really fiddly, when you have to mount 3 or for cables in the same box in uncomfortable places (in the attic or on wall high above).
It can be done - and when well done, these installations last long.
N.B. You can use an old box - you just have to clean it up. And be sure to follow the instruction in the paper, that should come with the box and the tool.
Happy fiddling ;-)))
