Hi there.

I recently got 2 x Beoplay A9's at a really good price and they sound awesome individually.

I want to set them up as stereo speakers for the TV and if possible my PlayStation 5 as well. I know I can use the line in ports to make this happen but what device do I use?

I am thinking it will be something like below

TV/Playstation ---> Amplifier with 2x Line out ports ---> Beoplay A9

But is this correct? Beoplay A9 has a built in amp right? so would that damage them to plug an additional Amp into them?

I am a beginner at these things so I have no idea, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You need an amp that has pre outs for this to work I believe.

Beovision 10, Beoplay V1, Beolab 17, Beolab 9, Beolab 4,  Beosound 2, Beosound Moment x 2,  Beoplay M3, Beogram 1700

....and you will most likely run into some sound delay problems.

Can you give me a bit more info on this or do you know of any devices that will work for this that you can link as an example?

Is pre out the technical term?

Sorry for all the questions, Like I said I am new to this

Hard to say, because the devices (the preamps) may vary.

I can’t give you any advice on which one will do the best job - maybe someone else.

You’ll need one with pre out connections.
If you have one with line outs, they normally will output at a fixed level. These are made to connect to an amplifier. This might work with the A9’s....but in that case you’d have to control the volume there - on both A9’s simultaniously (which in real life will not be possible).

There are some just stereo, however most people use a multichannel receiver with preout connections.

You will have to deal with the question of how to control the volume as well.

Most tv’s nowadays only have digital outputs (most seen are the optical outs).

The problem there is that these are fixed/at a fixed output - means you can not use the volume control of the tv.

(Some people alternatively use the headphone output - these in general are of lower quality. I would not recomment that).

With a preamp you will be able to control the volume output from that device - some preamps have a remote control, the multi channel receivers certainly have.

In that case you would have to leave the volume controls of your two A9’s untouched........after you have level matched them to each other.

Also consider, that if you place the two A9’s (as L and R) relatively far from another, it will be hard to sit in the sweetspot - that is where the phantom center is created.
Without a dedicated center channel (for watching tv, movies, games) and only with a stereo setup, the phantom center tends to move away from the place where the screen is, when you move.......and spoken words will be less audible.

Not saying that you should not do what you have planned - just saying, that it might not be as easy as expected.

Thanks for the detailed explanation and advice, it is much appreciated.

I have done a bit of homework and it looks like something like THIS could work. The fact its bluetooth also means I could connect phones to the speakers over bluetooth through the pre amp.

I just have 1 question on the setup, would it be ok to use a cable splitter adaptor on the "AUX" Line out to each of the speakers? the back of the device is below

Greetings,

I had a similar idea before of pairing 2 a9's however i have not had the opportunity of getting a second one. The yamaha device you chose, its not the right one for the job. kindly get the one without speaker outputs. Please use this link for the correct device https://www.av-connection.com/?PGr=8955

Answer to your question i would suggest the following:

1. Get 2X RCA Y splitters ( 3 way y rca spliiter)

2. Set the line level of each a9 to fixed level of 90

3. Connect Y splitter ( left & right on each a9) then connect the one end of  the splitter to the left and repeat the same process for the right channel.

4. Engage the preamp switch on the rear of the yamaha.

5. the volume will controlled on the yamaha going forth and you can use sources like tidal, deezer etc for music streaming.

If you need further clarity, kindly contact me on my skype: kgomotso.mabokela

Thanks so much for the information.

I have ordered the new pre amp (cancelled the old one) and have also purchased the y splitters with cables. ill set it up as soon as it arrives and let you know the outcome.

Thanks again

Would be a shame to limit the experience to a Skype conversation.

I guess other beoworlders could be interested in the result.....that is what the forum is about.

Dont worry, ill share everything here (photos videos etc) and a full list of parts so if anyone else wants to emulate my setup its easy for them to find.

I am surprised not many people only have posted this kind of setup especially since the price of Mark 1 A9s are so cheap now (compared to RRP).

I am in the process of moving house and want to wall mount these 2 speakers either side of the TV. I got the brackets from B&O direct for it... £90 each....

Hopefully it will be worth it

I have an mk2 a9 and have been looking for a second one till i gave up. I'm expecting a pair of the beolab 9's and was considering that yamaha streamer or the bluesound node 2i as a preamp.iI see now there is a newer model of the bluesound node 3 i think. I have a B&W pv1D sub which i plan to integrate with the beolab 9's during movie playback and for stereo, the sub will be off.  I really can't wait to see it all works out in th end.

It should sound great ( yamaha) and if you want to add the low end, you can consider the beolab 19 or 2. That yamaha preamp has some great sonic signature with a very good dac in built into it.

Those can be resolved on the a9 delay settings. i think that can be easily managed.

As far as I remember, there is no delay settings in an A9 MK1....since it is not NL/multiroom compatible, there was no need for that kind of setting.

I am willing to be corrected, if my memory serves me wrong.

All the parts turned up and it works perfect.

Parts I used

1 x Yamaha WXC-50

2 x Gold Plated RCA Phono Splitter

2 x Amazon Basics 2-Male to 2-Male RCA Audio Cable

VIDEO OF TEST SETUP

Rear setup

Small things to sort out

- I need to connect the 2 speakers to the B&O app to set the default volume higher (not sure if that's possible)

- Sound is perfect but these speakers dont have a lot of bass, maybe I can add a subwoofer to compliment these (any suggestions?)

- Yamaha mobile remote control app is astonishingly crap. Luckily I can just use the remote that comes with it

Do let me know on the Subwoofer options as I think I need one now.

Greetings,

The subwoofer that i can recommend and that will match the look, The B&W pv1d or Beolab 19. I see the connections were not done as i've recommended pe se.  Can you take pictures of the rear of each a9?

Split the the speakers at least 2  meters or more apart .To answer any other questions, i suggest let's do a skype call as requested initially so that i can help your further.

I need to connect the 2 speakers to the B&O app to set the default volume higher (not sure if that's possible)= You must download the B&O app. In the settings app: enter the ip address of your modem so that the speakers are recognised by your home network. once all is set up. get into the settings and adjust the line level to fixed rate of 90.

Thanks for the input,

You guys are really helpful.

The video & photos I sent are not the final placement for the speakers, I just set them up like that to test they work with the Yamaha.

I am currently moving house and I plan to wall mount them 2 meters apart (each side of TV) and will probably put the woofer below.

Kgomotso Mabokela:

I see the connections were not done as i've recommended pe se.  Can you take pictures of the rear of each a9?

I just realised I had them setup both sharing left & right lines. I should have done it like you suggested and dedicate a speaker to left or right correct?

Once I move and set it up on the walls how I plan ill revert here with the setup and you can advise if I have done it correctly.

Meanwhile ill look at the woofer suggestions you made and see if I can find a good deal.

Thanks

I have finally moved house and am now setting this up again,

Doing it the way you suggested works fine however I need help with the subwoofer as that does not work at all

The sub is plugged into the yamaha and switched on but it seems the pre amp is not sending signal out to the sub

Greetings,

What happens when playing music, what colour is displayed on the sub itself? Try logging into  the app and check sub settings of that yamaha? give a shot and share steos you've taken when connecting the sub. screenshots will do. if you can give me a call on skype and happy to assist although you previously insisted you want to use this platform for comms.

If the sub is not playing, there might be an issue with the sub or the subout of the yamaha itself. did you plug any other sub on the yamaha? did you try he pv1d on a different system to test if does work?

attach video if you may

good luck.

I had this set up with a Sony TV and a pair of A9s. I used the line in (stereo) jacks on the TV and A9s. Like someone said, use an RCA Splitter. I went direct from TV to A9s. No delays and sounded great. TV remote or Apple TV remote controlled volume. There was no delays…

for music, I used Apple Music or YouTube from the TV. The Apple TV/ remote was all I needed for everything.

overall, it was great for music, not so much for movies.

B&O in my life 😊:

  • Beolab 8002 + Beolab 2 + Beosound Core with Essence Remote (Office)
  • Beolab 6000 + Beolab 11 + Beosound Core with Essence Remote (Bedroom)
  • Beoplay A9 Mk2 (Living Room)
  • Beosound 1 with wireless dock (Portable)
  • Beosound Balance (Dining)
  • Beoplay H95 (Focused listening, travel)
  • Beoplay H9 (3rd gen) (retired)
  • Beoplay P6 (Portable)
  • Beotime wall clock (hallway entrance)
  • BMW X5 50i with B&O Audio Package (Commute/drive)
