Does anybody know which format the DVD 2 & the HDR 1/2 records in? I.e. is it .mpg, .avi, etc?

It is another way of storing on the harddrive.
The DVD2 was based on the HDR1000 or HDR720W from Philips.
The way of recording was done on the harddrive which was completely filled with containers. These containers was then filled with video.

To get short, it is not (easy) possible to connect the harddrive to a pc and transfer the videofiles to a pc.
