Hi all....

I recently took my Beogram 5005 out of storage as I thought it would be neat to start playing Vinyls again.

It was all working fine before it was packed, but now it won't track.

I couldn't get the Stylus Arm to move across by using the  '<TURN' button, and then I found a very short Belt had come off. When I got that back on, I was then able to move it across and back with the '<Turn' and 'LIFT>' button. I thought maybe this was the cause of the tracking problem but it still refuses to track.

As its following the track on the vinyl you can see the arm is swivelling as far as it can until it's forced to 'jump' the track.

The wire of the Wire drive seems to be in the correct place according to a drawing I found, and moves the stylus housing backwards and forwards manually.

I have read (I believe on this Forum) that this operation is controlled by something in the Stylus housing, but I can't find any details about it.

I know its a long time ago butif there is anyone with a memory of this, I'd appreciate your help!

Thanks

Hi,

It sounds to me that your stylus has a worn suspension. Therefore it doesn't  track the record properly.

Hi Beobuddy,

Thanks for replying so fast,

Where would this suspension be exactly?

The issue is nothing to do with the stylus.

The tracking is controlled by a bulb and an optical sensor - normally there is a shutter between the two that stops light reaching the sensor. As the arm tracks in and moves off-centre, the shutter allows some light to the sensor, which activates the motor to wind the arm carriage on - when the arm is straight again, the shutter covers the lamp again and the motor stops. This continues all the way across the record - simple but effective!

Anyway, what has most likely happened is either the bulb has blown or the opto-sensor has failed. The bulb failure is much more common but the last one of these I repaired it was the sensor that had failed.

I would check the cartridge first.
The stylus suspension sits inside the cartridge - you cannot see it, but check that the needle is fairly parallel to the tonearm at all times.

If that's all fine, the problem will most likely be in the optical tracking system.
- Tracking lamp doesn't light up while playing - replace lamp.
- Tracking lamp lights up but carriage doesn't follow - replace LDR.

In both cases readjust the tracking interrupter according to the servicemanual after replacing.

Parts here.

Thanks Dillon,

This is all brilliant stuff, and thanks for the link.

I have checked the cartridge and it has no tip, (which is going to be an expensive problem, but I'm sure had no bearing on the initial problem because it still managed to pull itself out of parallel with the tone arm without initiating any tracking.)

Where do I get a cheap MMC4?!!

Tom
