Have any of you seen FAIL displayed on a Beolab 3500 before (SW 1.1), or know what it would mean?

I just picked up a used Beolab 3500 (actually an LCS 9000, SW 1.1). It worked great when hooked up to a ML cable in one room.  Then I cut the cable, ran it through the wall to the next room, and joined it back together with a ML junction box. Now when I try using the 3500, it flashes on for a fraction of a second then displays FAIL.  I've checked the pink and blue wires and they have the appropriate voltage.  I also left it connected for a while and the clock did start displaying the time, so the data lines seem to be working.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I've wired up MasterLink junction boxes several times and this is the first trouble I've had. Thanks!

Hi Paul

I have come across this once before with a clients unit that was used in a very hot and steamy Kitchen. The fault is caused generally by humidity, I would take it to a service centre. We followed the repair guidelines but then also needed to replace another module, off the top of my head I cannot remember what it was?!

Cause: Humidity in connection with the glue or flux under 22R116 and a -9V copper foil underneath 22R116 results in the above symptom. The symptom can be illustrated by breathing (high humidity) through a straw on to 22R116. Well, at least it's not fried.  I just now hooked it up to a MasterLink connection in another room and it works fine. Smile   It was mounted on the inside wall of a bedroom, and given that it's winter, the humidity was about 30% so that couldn't be the cause. That leaves the ML wiring.  Guess I'll redo the junction box wiring and hope for the best.

Have any of you seen the FAIL message with it NOT being a from humidity or internal component failure?  I've looked at the Service Manual (for the Mark II version anyway) and there's no mention of this.

Also, what are the chances of damaging equipment by a mis-wired MasterLink?

Thanks again.

Oops, it IS fried after all. If freshly plugged in and cold it will work for a couple minutes before it fails. Off the repair shop.
