After having refoamed a couple of cx100 and cx50 I was ready to do the same with a pair of cx40. BUT... I can't remove the screws from the speakers. They seem to be very long and I can screw them about 1 cm and then they are stuck.
What's the trick?

Most likely the padding material curling up around the screws inside. The screws are very long.
Can't you take off the backsides and have a look inside ?

I never heard of CX40, must be C40 (what's the difference anyway, CX and C speakers?).
Not sure what your situation is but one trick is to put a side-cutter between the screw and the CX40 frame and while turning it lift the screw a bit up using the side cutter. I'm sure this could have been explained in less words but hey, my English...
