I have a question about the Beosystem 1, and I'm sure it's the same for the Beosystem 2.
My BS1 isn't turning on the BV4 screen, and I tried all the usual Control/Data codes 556, 559, etc.., I even connected the BS1 to my computer to read the codes it's sending, and it looks like it's buffering the control codes, which is causing a problem.
Using hyper terminal, connected directly to the BV4, I can send CTRL-B, P, O, N, CTRL-C, and the BV4 turns on right away, and the same but code POF , turns it off right away. And I can do it multiple times with no issue.
The BS1 turns the BV4 off fine, but won't turn it on, sometimes it does though. I see the PON code being sent from the BS1, sometimes. It looks like it's buffering and sending all the commands at the same time. Sometimes when I press the standby button on the Beo4, it turns on the BV4.
Could I be having an issue with one of the modules in the BS1? Or could it be something else? I have 2 BV4's and it's doing it with both.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Was this ever resolved? I am not entirely in the same situation, but I am planning on turning on a projector via the RS232 port of BS1, so it would be great to understand any pitfalls..

Hey CheapB,
No this hasn't been resolved. I need to figure out why the data module is buffering the serial data output. It's tearing me apart. On my BV4, code 556 and 559 do not seem to be turning it on, but turning it off is ok. Sending the commands manually using my computer does work.
Does anyone have any experience fixing these things on a software level?

That's not me, but have you connected the handshake lines of the serial cable somehow? Perhaps the BS1 thinks the other end of the line isn't ready to receive any commands.

I am expecting to receive my pre-loved BS1 in a week or so and I will be happy to do some testing and compare with your results. we probably need to coordinate setup. Even if you have a problem that is specific to your unit, it should be fixable as long as you get something consistent out of the serial port when you are trying to turn on the TV. Worst case we would have to build a small serial translator...
What software version are you on? I wonder if it is possible to update the software via the USB or if it has to go in for service.
The BS1 is sending out the control codes over serial, but seems like sometimes it's being buffered, it's hard to explain. The best way I can say it is that when I manually send the PON, using my computer, the BV4 turns on. When I see the BS1 send the PON, if it gets sent, the BV4 won't turn on. Weird, eh?

Software version, don't laugh, but I think it's at 2.0. Anyone know how we can update these ourselves? Surely it can't be too difficult.. I think it's just software via the data port....
How do you monitor the BS1 out on your PC? If I am using regular type A/B cable the PC doesn't detect the BS1 as a serial port.
Also, some serial monitors does not show non ascii characters. it would be good to understand exactly what the BS1 is sending. I am assuming you are using the same cable when you are going direct from BS1 to the TV or via the PC? does the BS1 send the PON everytime or just sometimes?
I think I am on SW 4.5, so I would love to be able to upgrade the software myself as well. Anyone??

I connected the bs1 datacable to a gender changer, and plugged it into the serial port of an old laptop running windows. Yes, it's the same cable, but a gender changer is required.
I opened up Hyperterminal, and then watched the codes stream. Hyperterminal shows the control codes as ASCII symbols.
BS1 sends PON almost everytime it looks like, but sometimes the data is sent buffered, I can see it dump a bunch of commands all at the same time, such that when I hit the standby button, it sends PON at that time.

It would be amazing to upgrade the software myself too. So far I haven't had much luck. Maybe someone here has the answer?

I dont use the dataport, and I don't have the USB type B/DB9 cable. I was trying to use a regular Type A/B USB cable, but it was not recognized. Is there a way to use a standard USB cable for this? or alternatively anyone who has a pinout of the cable connections? IF so I would be happy to test..

A regular USB cable won't work. You'll need the B&O usb->serial cable. I believe it's not even actually a usb port on the BS1 side, it's just a serial port. Not sure the reason behind the USB-style connector. I'd guess the updates are all over serial at 9600 baud. Have you found the service manual for the BS1? There might be some info on the pinout there?

I just dug up the service manual.
Pin1 - Interlock Sense, 200 kohms, (the port will not work unless vpin1 > 5.5v or < -0.5v)
Pin2 - RS232 Data out
Pin3 - RS232 Data in
Pin4 - GND
So i get Pin2,3,4 and know how to assign this to the DB9, but I am not sure about pin1. "vpin1" may just be a typo for pin1 - there are several typos in the manual, but I am not sure if the BS1 is expecting a voltage or if it is providing. and is states the port will not work without the voltage in place..
If you have a multimeter, can you test which pin on the DB9 the pin1 on the USB is assigned to? Actually just in case it would be great if you could provide this for all four to make sure. the DB9 typically have a "1" next to the first pin if you are not familiar with pin numbers.

Sure I'll give it a shot later tonight, if my multimeter works..
