After 10 months, the BeoLa5 with the Chassis problem will finally be repaired tomorrow. Today I received the Charisma VanDerGraafGenerator box with 5.1 remixes of their great albums on a Blu Ray.
When I tried years ago - for movies - with my BV-11 as centre, BL5's as fronts and BL18's as rear and did not like it at al. So simply moved back to Stereo.Especially the sound from the BV-11 hugely disappointed me then, though without BL5's and making it the main speaker it actually is very good - the last 10 months without BL5.
But for my fave music I want to make an exception and hence wondering how I should configure it to get the 5.1 experience as intended with BV11 with left and right next to it 2 BL5's and behind myself 2 BL18's ?
Apologies if this is basic, but I spent hours then trying....

A couple of years ago you had a thread with a similar question.
Didn’t your experiments at that time bring you any further?
I can assure you that you can have a decent result with your speaker combination.
A friend of mine has the BV11 (55”) and a set of the BL90’s - and he does not complain.
When configuring the 5.1 Speaker group try adding a couple of db to the BV speakers (set to C, C) than what you would normally set them to, when using a db meter - and also set the distance at 20-30 cm further away than what you actually have measured for tour seating position.
The bas management of the BSys4 engine should see to the overall bas management, if you have made the configuration with the right speakers.
As alway….a bit of experimenting will always help, since every room is dfferent.
Also the BL5’s can be a bit beasty depending on where they are placed.

Thanks for reminding me that I may have asked you all before for 5.1 - for movies, but I mostly remember trying many things - including maybe your suggestions- but I always found that the best sound -for movies- was when not using the BV11 speakers (and shutting off 5.1).
But since I now was forced for 10 months to not use the BL5’s at all, I was actually impressed by the BV11 speakers (as main speakers, with BL18’s in the back, in simple stereo mode) when I made them in charge of what before the BL5’s were doing…
back then, with BL5’s as front and BV11 as centre in 5.1 for movies it sounded worse - but main question now is: how would I get the most out of 5.1 music remixes as I guess thats a different animal than movies?
I guess the best advice is to “experiment” as I can see how it would depend on exact room set-up etc.
thanks for taking time!
Obviously experiment to see what starts to sound pleasing to you, music wise.
It may be the case that you are in the camp of just preferring stereo for music. I cant bear music upmixed to 5.1.
It can be ok for back ground listening I guess, but personally for anything other than background listening, the true image upmixing doesn't do it for me.
Obviously if you have music source encoded in 5.1, then the true image engine will do a fine job.
But anyway, experiment away, but it may be the case that you end up back listening to music in stereo.
Your comment that using the BV11 in a 5.1 movie setup was not pleasing though is surprising - I've never heard that complaint for movies and that setup. So there may be a sensitivity or expectation you have that is not normal (no criticism at all), and if that setup didn't work for you movie wise, I'm guessing that tinkering with the same speaker set for 5.1 music will not work for you either.
@Rene
Like Mikipedia wrote, what is it that you dislike or miss or….?
Update: after 10 months, today the chassis of one of my BL5’s was replaced, so first thing I did was play the 5.1 surround Blu Ray from de Charisma box I received yesterday. First up Undercover Man from their famour Godbluff album, and…. The sound blew me away! What a difference with stereo version!
So for music i am perfectly happy. This weekend I will put on one of my fave movies again (Princess Bride) and will see it in 5.1 and experiment again… problem previously was that I did not like the centre speaker BV11 where all of the main actors’ talking came and hardly anything came thru the BL5’s… but I will now experiment (better).
thanks again for all advises - happy VdGG + B&O (old style) fan
For my understanding….you mean that you heard the native 5.1 mix of the album - and that this blew you away!?
By the way, I’d like to listen to all these albums (of course in 5.1) - but the box is rather pricey, and all I’d need are the Bluray discs.
Please keep us updated with your ‘experiments’.
I meant Receiver 1, not Transmitter 1 :-).
After my B&O dealer had replaced the chassis of my BL5, he suggested I should also connect my BL2 sub to the system. (that one is now kinda idle in a bedroom, because 10 years back the other dealer said the BL2 does little with BL5’s but would enhance my BL8000’s in the bedroom).
problem is, unsurprisingly, the cabling to connect it to the BV11… hence: would it be a good idea to buy a receiver 1?
so I would then have:
BV11; 2 BL5 (powerlink); 2 BL18 (WISA) and the BL2 (receiver 1/WISA)
would that work properly? Thanks!
Reneps: indeed, by experimenting also 2 movies I tried now sound really good in surround mode; but still less so for one of my fave movies -that I used back then for testing 5.1…(Princess Bride DVD); so as one you suggested it may be disk related that I was so disappointed a fews ago).
@ReneB
It makes very little sense to suggest connecting the BL2 in addition to the 5’s.
With the 5’ you have 2 ‘subs’ that are more capable than the 2 - and you would have to trick the bas management of the BV11 in order to hear something from the 2.
I don’t understand how your B&O dealer can suggest this…..the first one was right, keep the BL2 with the 8000’s if you are pleased with the sound there.
Apart from the fact that not all 5.1 sources are done right - for further investigating, why you may have some minor results, please post a picture of how your speaker setup is with the 5.1 group (from the menu). And please write which soundtrack from the movie, you have selected in the DVD menuMaybe that will help giving further advice.
Have you ever concidered getting that movie in a Bluray version - the picture will be improved and maybe the sound also.
Assuming that you have a blurayplayer, did you set that source to play from the 5.1 Speakers Group (as above) per default - and did you choose the native 5.1 track for the playback?
(Sorry for asking, if that is self-evident - but we needs to know all details).
No need to play with bas management at the moment - the system in general will know the right values.
