May be I’m a dinosaur and a Luddite but I love CDs and physical media. Didn’t know I had ADHD until I streamed, kept flipping through tracks and never settling down. Too much choice? Will it still be there in a few months or will it disappear from the streaming service? Is it watermarked, compressed or just a bad remaster? Nice to get away from iPads, tablets and mobile devices. Buying CDs is cheaper than paying a monthly subscription.

No,bying CDs is not cheaper.I still have collection of 200+ CDs and 300+ LPs .And I enjoy physical media, not playing particular track, but entire album.Today, there is so much beautiful music all over the world, awaiting to be explored. And I am not going to buy any more CDs or LPs.My family is using Deezer( family option),myself only Tidal premium, which costs me abt 5 euro per month, and I am very happy with that. When I want to hear something new to my taste, just stream...No more physical media.

I still buy CD's too. For me it has a few advantages:

  • Sometimes they're cheaper than the digital version, but this is probably the exception to the rule. I don't like subscriptions so every subscription I have is subject to close monitoring and scrutiny.
  • My car is 14 years old. I hardly use it as everything I need is within walking distance. I won't replace it as long as it does what it needs to do. I don't want to replace the CD-player with an ugly after market unit.
  • Some of my CD's are autographed by the singers / band members. Not that easy with digital media. Well maybe I should buy NFT's instead.

Deezer at CD quality is £180 per year. For that money, I can buy approximately 30 used CDs per year and it’s the right master/version to keep for life.

Of course there are advantages and disadvantages for everything, for example:

  • Research indicates that the carbon footprint of a CD is lower than that of streaming if you've streamed the album more than 27 times.
  • The nice thing about physical media is that you own it forever. I continually see tracks in my streamed playlists going dead because its been removed from the service's catalogue for some reason
  • Streaming services have a tendency of changing their storage or transmission format (take for example, when Tidal suddenly turned on the MQA switch). This may or may not be an improvement that you may or may not want.
  • There can be hidden quality differences in streamed media vs. physical media, either due to CODECs
    • Example 1: Netflix vs. Blu-ray - although you can watch the same movie via both in "Dolby Atmos" - the streamed version cannot be lossless - whereas the physical media version can (but might not be....)
    • Example 2: Some music labels watermark their tracks stored on streaming services' storage - so, although you're streaming a lossless file, you're still getting weird lossy-CODEC-like artefacts
  • Streamed services suffer from dropouts, either due to the QoS on the stream itself, or because the stored track has an error. Then again, scratched CDs skip, so this might be a tie.
  • Very few streaming services offer multichannel music (which is becoming trendy, and which I've listened to a lot for the past 20 years) and none of them offer lossless multichannel music (which I listen to a lot - but I might be weird...)
  • I've got LOTS of CD's that I listen to a LOT that will never make it to the catalogues of any streaming service - not only because I have "unique" taste in music, but because some tracks are old... (For example, try finding the movie "My Dinner with André" on any streaming service. Or find the Verve release "Mona Lisa" by Densil Pinnock and Bill Coon. You can't.)

Of course, the simple solution is not an "OR" but an "AND" To quote an old SNL commercial for a product called Shimmer - "It's a floor wax AND a dessert topping!" I stream music every day. I also play CDs, SACDs, and DVD-Audio Discs every day. And, lately, I've also started playing Dolby Atmos music tracks from Blu-ray...

The big drawback of CD's, mainly when using a B&O Cd player, is the replacement of the lasers. I would play a lot more CD's if replacement lasers were easy to buy and replace. This is where streaming has a big advantage over CD's.

Just found ‘Dinner with Andre’ on Youtube and it looks like my kind of film: angst, existential issues, meaning. Most of my mates (the English slang word for friends/buddies…and not sexual partners) aren’t into this kind of cinema - they’re partial to guns, girls, t*ts, sportscars, Marvel and aliens.

I haven't owned a CD in more than 15 years, when I ripped all 400+ of them and then sold them, because my toddler daughter at the time kept destroying them and we had no convenient place in our NYC apartment to put them out of her reach. I have an extensive vinyl collection, and I listen to streaming music (Deezer Hifi and Apple Music).

But I just committed to buying a Beosound 9000 MK3 with very few hours on it, which should be installed soon, so I went out to buy some CDs--some favorites I already own on vinyl, along with some I haven't come across easily on vinyl or with bonus material. My favorite record shop has a good selection of used CDs, and after buying both new and used vinyl, I was pleasantly surprised at the cheap cost of most CDs. Although vinyl will always be my favorite, I have no real preference for which way I listen to music at the moment I feel like listening to music, so I'm looking forward to getting back into them--especially on the 9000.

I was a spotify User for more than 7 years and it was good. But on one day i wanted more Sound, more quality. And then i played my CDs, wow!

Deezer HiFi is nice, but i dont want to pay 15€ a month. Because its Not the end, my wife, my children…

And now I still buy CDs and want to run my own Streaming Server 🤪

BS9000 + BS Core + Beosystem 3 + BL8000 + BL4 + BL2 + BL7-1 // BeoVision 7 32“ + BL8000 // Beoplay M5 // Beoplay S3 // 2x BL3500 // 2x BeoPlay A6 + 2x Essence Remote // 2x BeoSound 8 // Playmaker + BL6000

I agree, however, I am somewhere in between. I do have physical media still, have my own music server and use streaming for non essential listening.

I am on my 3 server... not because it dyed, but because the OS is no longer updated. Not exactly a money saving solution...
I hate streaming... missing songs bug me endlessly and the 'playing' devices needs updating all the time as well.

Having to replace a laser once every 20 yrs is not that big a deal considering  all of this...

I am always wary of the assertion, "research shows...".  The only citation that I found was just P.R. for a paper, which I cannot find: https://www.musictank.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/EnergyReportPR.pdf That's a dead link, but is where the BBC Future article got its 27-times number, in https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20190207-why-streaming-music-may-be-bad-for-climate-change .  If anybody has the actual research, I'm curious to see their formula/model.  (Also of interest may be "Decomposed: The Political Ecology Of Music", by Kyle Devine, U. Oslo, MIT Press, 2019.)

Oh yes, yes, he *is* weird; have you seen that YouTube video of him standing in a perfectly good field/pitch, talking about... sound?!?!  But in the immortal words of PlatoxxxxxThe Firesign Theatre, "We're all Bozos on this bus."Big Smile

HI Trackbeo,

I'm looking for the PDF - I downloaded it when it came out - but I couldn't find it this morning. Maybe I'll have better luck over the weekend.

Thanks for the pointer to the Devine book - looks interesting.

As for the YouTube video you mention - I think that's one of the better things to do on a football pitch. A bunch of "adults" running around chasing after a ball never made any sense to me - any more than any other sport. Makes even less sense to me why people watch other people do it.

Cheers

I'm finding this thread very interesting, particularly as I am in the process of changing from Masterlink to Netlink products, hence being steered more toward online/streaming music.

I'm impressed by the availability of streamed music of any gendre, however I do miss the 'one button operation' of my Beosound 9000.... ie just press 'CD' on the Bed 4, as opposed to starting up the iPad, selecting the app, browsing through the seemingly infinite number of playlists, etc etc.

For deep listening, cd wins hands down. For background/ambient listening streaming is perhaps preferable.

Just my 2c, thanks for reading!

For 'one button' operation I still use my BC9500's tape player.  The advantage over CD is that it doesn't have to be Track 1 that comes on when I press a single button (A.MEM) on the remote.

That's what I was looking for. with a NL/ML Converter it is possible just press one button on a beo4, and the music, or radio starts.

Hello,

This thread happens while I was collecting infos about CD players, I’d like to have a nice looking player to be able to listen to my old CD collection.

Surprisingly, during my online digging, I have discovered that there’s a resurgence of the cd, a scaled-down version of what happens with the vinyl rebirth!

It is mainly nostalgia in my case (I am streaming most of the time) but for the current young generations it is a way to connect to their parents, they are from the CD generation of which I am part of.

In a way, CD might become the new vinyl.

I am unable to tell if there’s a market for a modern fancy CD player.

I can only say that if we exclude B&O, 99% of the other players, both vintage or modern, are boring black/silver boxes.

Would it be an option for B&O to consider a BS Ouverture / 9000 as the next Recreated Limited Edition?

Regards.

Olivier

If B&O made a strong effort with a Recreated Limited Edition CD machine, I would be first in the queue to buy one. A refreshed BS9000 (incorporating streaming services, internet radio and Roon) and I’d let B&O lift me of my hard earnt cash.
