Beosystem 2500 back from the brink

I've found out first hand the need to take your B&O equipment to an experienced repair shop. I was able to pick up this system for $30 in as is (broken) condition. The seller explained he turned it on one day and the magic blue smoke that makes all electronics work came out. The doors opened, the radio cracked, but the tape and cd units didn't turn - probably just bad belts I thought. What have I got to lose for such a small investment?

It came complete with the wall mount kit and Beolink 1000 remote. I took it to my friend that repairs electronic equipment and he explained he had great difficulty in working on this. Jump ahead several months and he's given up on it and I took it back. Along the way he lost the back plate and broke one of the glass doors - he offered to pay for replacement. Look, he's a good guy and fixed many other things for me in the past so live and learn - no bench charge.

Unfortunately, the BeoCenter portion is dead - no standby, won't turn on at all. I sent a note to Atlantic Systems and they agreed to take a look at my system and assured me I was not alone with this story and that they can bring it back to life. It seems very much worth the $40 bench charge, so I will drive it down to them in a week or two. I'll tell you what they find if you wish to follow this saga. Stat tuned.

Well, now I was able to pick up a Beosound 4000 and matching Beolab 2500s. I also got two different color frets for the speakers. One of the doors was broken and the cable was loose. I took it to Atlantic Systems for repair. While there, they said I should still bring in the BeoCenter 2500 - since they could probably fix that too. I think I'll take it in when I pick up the BS4000.

Where are you finding all of these broken Beosounds? If you just keep an eye on Ebay there are beautiful like new BS2300s, 2500s, and 4000s that I've seen go for as little 350.00 in complete condition WITH the Lab 2500s. Surely by the time you finish repairing all of this you'll be at least in the couple hundred dollar range, no?

Well I got the BeoSystem with BC2500, BL2500, BL1000 remote, and wall mount kit for $30. The BS4000 was $100. I'm just "frugal", I guess. Yes, I will have to invest in the repairs, but I won't sink a lot of money into them. I'll sell them for parts if the estimates are too high for me.

Picking up the repaired BS4000 from Atlantic Systems this evening. It took a little more work than just re-stringing the door cable. $390 total with new glass doors taking up a large part of the cost. Apparently, someone had attempted a repair before I bought it and did some damage. Can't wait to hook it all up to the BL2500s and have a good listen. Now, what to play?....

Had to reset the option to default because the BL1000 remote wouldn't control it at first. After that, I loaded a Genesis CD and listened to a few songs. I just may mount it to the wall this weekend.

Actually, I'd love to get a BS4000 for my inlaws some day.  I think my mother-in-law would pee a little.

After, of course. The biggest problem was finding a box big enough. I have it now, along with all the packing material. Maybe a boxing thread?

It's all working perfectly - and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the cassette tape playback too. It sounds very nice with the BL2500s. I still love my pizza box stack, but I can really see the appeal of this system. I would love to hear it with a set of Pentas. I just don't have the spare cash right now, or I'd be looking.

Very cool. I think the cassette and CD combo is very attractive.

With your track record, I won't be surprised if you find a pair of Pentas on Craigslist for fifty bucks.

Is that a special US version of Beosound 3000/3200??? Just like the BS Century was called BS 2000 in US...

I can not find any description of BS 4000 here on Beoworld Huh?

The BeoSound 4000 is the name for the Ouverture outside of Europe.

I have an opportunity to pick up a fully serviced 4000 in its original box with the BL2500s for 500 bucks. Kind of tempted except I don't really know where I'd use it. But it seems like it's always good to just "have" one of those around.
