watching Steve’s video on BL28, I got tempted. Hence, does it really make sense to trade in my 3 year old BL18’s for 28’s in case the BL18/28 are “only” rear speakers in eg a surround set-up with BL5’s as front speakers?
ReneTempted…though my wife isn’t convinced re the looks of the BL28. Certainly not the wooden ones.still blown away by the “VdGG Charisma years” box surround mixes
Difficult to say…..however, I’d say no!
Go buy a BS Level for your wife instead.

There is a tv - and there is a BV
Rene, with BL5 up front, it is hard to imagine your rear speakers getting significant bass effects in movies. That is to say, I imagine most of your LFE are going to be coming from the left, center and right channels.
Aesthetics aside, my opinion is if money is not of concern and you want to tinker with your system, sure, go for it. You may notice more “action” coming from the rear in action movies. But if money is to be considered, it’s likely not worth the additional money to replace rear BL18 with BL28 for additional rear bass effects.
Any additional thoughts since you first posed the question?

Thanks - my wife has in her "tudy" (connected to good old BS3000 and Beogram 6000) a set of BL3's, which she really likes.
Actually, now that you mention BS: I was first tempted buying 2 BS Balances until I found out no Powerlink / WISA, so rather useless for BS3000 or BV11 (that latter would be for having WISA speakers for dining room part where we can only have smallish speakers; if the BS Balance would have WISA I would have bought 2 right away.
thanks for the "No" !
Rene
Thanks ! I wouldn't say "money is of no concern", cause then I would have bought BL50's :-) .
Maybe good to know that I only consider(ed) it because of the latest Van der Graaf Generator surround 5.1 remixes; i.e. music surround not movies in surround.
I am totally impressed by some of the music surround DVD/BR I had but never listened to before in surround until that VdGG discovery. So have been listening a lot the last few weeks to not only mr Hammill in 'surround", but also good old Quadrophenia (almost as intended in "Quad"), Talking Heads' Remain in Light, KC's Discipline and Beat, PF's Wish You Were Here and almost a dozen of wonderful Nick Cave 5.1 remixes I had forgotten about, as well as those available on Apple Music (Abbey Road, Night at the Opera etc).
So what I'm after is I guess more than "rear bass effects" (that would apply to Movies with 5.1, not remixes of music, where quite often a lot is going on, certainly when the remix is more like a "Quad" version)
I was also a bit triggered by what Steve mentioned in his video, i.e. that for the BL28 one can choose a setting which - in my interpretation- makes the exact positioning less critical: I found that only in a sweet spot the amazing surround sound of the music from the back comes across with the BL18's....
I guess I was / am hoping with the BL28 the exact positioning of *the listener* becomes less critical ?
you asked for my further thoughts ;-) Sorry for expanding - that happens when 2 of my long terms passions are involved (VdGG since 1977 and B&O since 1985).
I applaud your newly discovered love for multichannel music - multichannel music sure needs more attention.
So don’t feel sorry for ‘expanding’.
I am not sure which explanation from Steve, you are referring to - however, you should know that using the 28’s in a 5.1 setup means that they will be connected via Powerlink and managed in the sound settings of the BV just like your current BL18’s.
Not saying that you should not buy these - not at all….,they are excellent - but for the purpose of being surround channels in your 5.1 setup they might not give you as much improvement as you would hope for ( = ‘the exact positioning of *the listener* becomes less critical’) Just like with 2 channel music a multichannel setup demands a good sweet spot when listening.
The only one that can decide what is best, is you……if you could try out the 28’s at your own place.
I would also say no as I think you’re current system is hard to beat. If you prefer the design sure, but the design of the 18s and the 5s is a statement in itself. I am still not sure where I am with the design of the 28s, somewhere in the ‘they are ok looking’ region, but somehow their profile is a little too slim for me and they don’t really match other products as well as say the 18s, 20s, 50s, 5s etc, but that’s just my opinion! Love what you have, no need for change.
B&O products are V1-32, BS2, H95, E8 and an Essence remote.11-46 now replaced with Sony A90J 65”, Sony HT-A9, Sony UBP-X800M2 and Sony SRS-NS7.
Thanks all ! Decision made: no change!
