For those in the Apple ambit: with the newly released macOS Monterey, you can “AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad to a Mac.” This extends the multi-room capability of Airplay; as for instance, in my case my Mac is connected to a stereo pair of Beoplay S3s. These will now be Airplay 2 targets.
For me its mostly academic - I don't do much multi-stuff - but I know that some here rely on AP2 for multi-room music distribution. FYI.
I wish Google invested in developing Chromecast as much as Apple does it with AirPlay...
