Hi, i came across a Beomaster 4401 with alu-front ! how can this be ? could it be a fraud ? to my best knowledge the 4401 was a black version of 4400. I'm puzzled can anybody inlighten me ? PS i found it on a farm very close to the B&O factory i Struer, think-think.
The only difference is the black front as shown in the service manual. A picture would be wonderful.

Yes i know, but i have turned it around and on the back it's identical to 4400 but there's a beomaster 3000 powersupply/trafo installed and it's marked with red PP-label (prototype?) will do pictures later tonight after my snookersession ;-).
My 4401 has a 3000 Power supply and the red labels - Interesting to see the serial number!
Does it have 4401 on the front or 4400?

Might have belonged to the "secret sheep" who have not been heard of recently.
Hi trying to attach photos but i get an errormessage like this Maximum request length exceeded can anyone tell me how to attach photos ? but here are text answars serialno. 892417 and "PP P3 No. 1721" is the text on the red label and there is another white label with handwriting "NY T. PP23" NY being danish for new, and yes it has exactly the same front as the 4400 but it's marked 4401 in the right/usual place ! the font and age of text seems right and untampered. Will i have to open it to get info ( don't want to mess with it unless i have to!!) ?

Scale them down. They are probably some enormous file size now...

Here's front photo
well it can't be black sheep then

Nice find !
This seems very odd. The back I can understand but why make the front have 4401 on it. Unless they use the nomenclature for prototypes?
If you look at the type numbers, my black one is 892416, your silver one is 892417. The model number for the 4401 is 2416 and for the silver 4400 is 2417. I think we both have early prototypes - mine of the black 4401, which was never put into production, and yours is an early prototype of the silver 4400. Like the Beomaster 6001 we have seen before, the 001 label signifies a pre-production model.
Anyone have a better suggestion?!
Thanks for input, i'm just a novice in this field ! only in it for the money trying to save some of the old stuff from the dump and making it available to the world. Is this something that's worth anything extra or will i have to just sell it as a modified 4400 !

My guess is that there is no 4401, only pre-production models to the 4400: partly in black and partly in silver. There was never any intention to produce a 4401, but the designers were not sure if the 4400 would look like BM 3000 or BM 4000.

I would be interested, if you want to sell it - It would be a nice addition to my BeoMaster 6001! I live close to Struer.

Hi Dennis i'll send you a PM, no need to communicate in danish here

A few pictures of my BeoMaster 6001 for those who are interested:
I think it says '892251' on the red label, which simply is the type number with with '89' in front of it. Could '00520' be a production number then? There has been a sticker next to the red label at some point - sad that it's gone. Could be interesting to know, what was on the missing sticker.
EDIT: 16th of September 2014; Updated with newer, better pictures.

Reasonable thought but I don't think that was the case. The service manual for the 4400 also lists the 4401 and gives part numbers for the black parts. And the type numbers are different. This differentiates it from the 6001 which is clearly a very early development model and most interesting because of this. However we have still to see a production 4401 in black so something clearly happened.
I actually had in mind to send Struer Museum an email, to see, if they could shed some light on these early models.
There is something really strange about this. You could very easily be tempted to think, that the '1' on the black 4401 indicates, that it is a prototype, like on the others we have seen (Silver 4401, 6001), but that isn't the case according to the service manual.
The silver 4401 must then be an early sample on the same level as the 6001. And the black 4401's we then know of, are on the same level as well, as they have red labels. The confusion lies in, that the red labelled black 4401's aren't named different from the black production line 4401's mentioned in the service manual, but that the silver one is...
I will try to contact Struer Museum at some point, and send them the pictures from this thread together with our speculations, if the copyright owners of the pictures give me their permission.
I did discuss this with B&O when in Struer but they didn't seem very interested! I agree that a look through the old archives would be splendid fun though I wonder how much still exists. The information would seem to not be sensitive anymore and could actually show B&O in a good light and add to the glamour of the brand. Good publicity for the modern company.
