Thanks to all that helped me with my router issue all set now to look into buying a NAS drive to connect to my apple airport extreme.

So thought I would ask you for advice on the best NAS drives to look for?

Have a look at Synology. Recommended by dealers. Fast and accurate with good software. For a back-up you could use a Raid-system. The 12-series will do the job.

I had a LaCie 2big, there was a problem : the DLNA index was corrupted after each wake up, so I never had a complete library accessible without re-indexing...

Went the Synology way with a DS412+, and now everything is just perfect.

I also have a Synology (DS212, I think) and it's fantastic and accessible from just about any device. Currently using it to store ripped (legal) Blu-ray movies, my audio tracks and other media. It has 2 x 2TB drives, which were about £160 for both.

Mbee, thanks for your reply. Glad you answered as I was considering a lacie 2big as I have been using their drives for several years but had no NAS from them. Your response has helped me decide to steer clear of them for this purpose. Thnks

Ok just brought a synology from amazon will be here in some days. In order not to loose time I have one more question. My computer is an Imac, I also use an iPad. So all my music is stored on an external hard drive through iTunes. Now I understand I will need to migrate my music to the NAS drive when it arrives, however is there anything I nees to thnk about now. For instance will I still be able to use iTunes, as my music store. Etc etc?

Just re-direct your iTunes library so it points to the music on the NAS drive, rather than from your computer. When iTunes starts, it will load the library from the NAS.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449

Copy the music folder from your computer to the NAS (your NAS mounts as a drive on your Mac), then relocate the source of the library.

Yep thought so, and I take it that by doing this, the music will also show up on the encore aswell.

Page 22 of the userguide:

"Add a NAS as a music library ...

> Use the pointer to highlight MODE.

> Turn the wheel to select SETTINGS, and press twice then GO on your music system.

> Use the pointer to highlight SERVICE

SETTINGS.
> Turn the
wheel to select MUSIC STORAGE and press GO.

> Select the name of your NAS in the menu.

Press GO to select."

And of cource The DLNA-server must be set to on in the settings of the Synology.

The files must be stored in the right place on the NAS according to the userguide.

You don't have iTunes on your NAS. There might be a iTunes-server (DAAP-server) running on the NAS as well, but you don't need that for the Encore - just the DLNA-server.

Does this makes sense to you - otherweise feel fe to ask again.
