Hi all, I'm new to the forum and am looking for specific advice on bs9000 issues. I know these have been discussed over the years,  but I'm wondering if there are any definitive answers nowadays.

My ca. 2004 unit has developed a problem reading discs. This involves the carriage moving to the disc and frequently spinning it both forward and in reverse,  often at very high speed. When this happens the unit either stops and goes into standby OR locates track 1 (accompanied by a quiet beep sound), playing track 1 ONLY and then switching to standby.

This happens at random in any disc location, whether directly selected or on on sequential/random play, before and after cleaning the pegs, glass and laser. It happens about 1 in 3 times a disc is selected.

I have heard a number of possible reasons ranging from dust through to laser failure. Since the unit is out of warranty I would like to get an idea of the likely cause so I don't get ripped off by my b&o dealers appointed service agent.

A secondary issue (I think) is the slowish carriage speed and noticable bumpy sound as it moves at speed. When returning at slow speed (after going into standby) the movement is accompanied by a slow metallic scraping sound.

Any advice on any of the issues above would be really appreciated. I love my b&o but it's frustrating the hell outta me at the moment!

Your BS9000 needs indeed a new laser.

Underneath the lasercarridge there is a lever. That lever needs also replaced. This lever moves the laser unit up and down and is bended. Hardly to see by eye.

I assume that you've checked the suspension springs? The need to be in the correct position. If you change the placing position from wall to table or vice versa, then these springs needs to be re-adjusted.

Thanks buddy. .. it's as bad as I thought then. The unit obviously needs a general overhaul plus laser replacement. I've seen some recommendations on the forums about independent b&o specialists (in the UK).  I'm not convinced by my local b&o franchise dealer (under new management since I bought the bs9000) referring me to their appointed service agent.

Does anyone have any advice on choosing service companies? The unit is out of warranty, so I don't feel obliged to go with the franchisee's choice.

Once again, any advice gratefully received!!

The lever can be placed from underneath. By unscrewing the bottomplate you can acces the carrier.

Normally if you replace your laser at the dealers, the latest laser and controlunit will be placed. That the expensive version, but you're getting the latest/best version.

By replacing the laserunit itself (just the pickup element), you'll have to look which laser version you have. Mine is from 1999 and has the CDM 12.6 version. Ebay provides several versions.

BTW be aware that the metallic scraping sound is caused by the spindle motor and can scratch/damage your cd's

Thanks again beobuddy,  I'm not confident to swap out the unit and undertake any adjustments to the mechanisms myself, so I will either use the franchisees appointed agent (who appear to be a generalist service company) or I'll use an independent specialist (any recommendations for UK companies welcome).

Also, while the unit is in for servicing are there any other issues I should ask the engineers to look at. For example,  are there any software updates that could be applied? The 9000 has never been serviced since 2004. I notice for example that the beo4 supplied with it has the 'A.MEM' key, but the 9000 displays 'A.TAPE' when that input is selected.  Not sure if that's significant.

Thanks once again.
