I have recently purchased both on e bay both very cheap I prefer the looks of the beovision but which one offers the better picture?
You'll just have to try them out yourself. The MX4000 will be clearly older, so it might not perform at its best any more either (that'll obviously depend on the actual usage hours of the sets).
Internally they will be completely different and the BV1 is more modern. The MX can't natively display 16:9 material, for example, so your source will have to do letterboxing for that, and that alone will result in inferior PQ.
