Hi all!

Since a new Beovision is currently not within my budget, I have been looking for a second hand BV5 which are now, 8-10 years old, only about double the price of a new ordinary Samsung or similar which is within my reach. I would like some advice before shopping:

1. Is the picture quality very different between Mk 1, 2 and 3 ?

2. On the Mk3 there is a DVI port which means I would be able to connect a new (black) Apple TV through a HDMI -> DVI cable but no sound, am I right?  How do I connect this to work properly with sound?

3. Since the DVI port on the BV5 is the only digital interface, is there a smart and convenient way to use that for several units with HDMI, some kind of smart switch that can be controlled via BEO4 in a PUC or a Lintronic setup?

Any experiences, advice, tips and tricks are welcome! :)

/Peter

My advice: let go of that BV5-wish!

Think different, buy a V1.

Greetings Millemissen

Hi Millemissen,

Thanks for your advice! I was exited about the arrival of the new V1, since it has a fairly reasonable price. Now it even is ML compatible if I am correct ( which is a must for me..) But, it doesnt have a motorized stand ....and...sorry to say...it is really ugly (IMHO). It really doesnt match my BL8000 and BL6000 which my BV3-32 does perfectly and I think a BV5 would do also..

Here in the Nordics, you can buy a second hand BV5 for around 1000 Euros, which is very reasonable, but maybe the technology is too old to bother to get one..  Crying  After all, I have Apple TV and a HD Cable TV box I want to attach to it..

Maybe a new, stylish and reasonable priced Beovision is just around the corner?

Greetings,

/P

But the V1 has a special hidey hole for your Apple TV. I reckon the design of the V1 would grow on you once it is in situ.

Don't go down the route of buying yesteryears technology when if at 8-10 years old it could potentially go at any point.

I reckon the TV to come will be another BP a BV2 I reckon!

I'm sure other V1 owners could share pictures of how their setup goes with 6000 and 8000 speakers.

As much as i loathe it, the technology on the V1 will be better than the 5 regardless of how much it originally cost. I had a 6-22 but could not connect any of my appliances to it with HDMI. I tried work arounds but they never really cut the mustard.

DVI madness....

Hi Peter,

It's very interesting to recognize that most people want to get a ten year old Beovision with real B&O design than a new ugly V1 for the same price. But I'm with you!

To connect an Apple TV to a Beovision with only digital DVI input you need a converter like this to get (analogue) stereo sound:

http://www.amazon.de/Digital-Toslink-Analog-stereo-Konverter/dp/B004O2P0CS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365072587&sr=8-1&keywords=digital+toslink

Thanks for the input, Guys!

Maybe its just wiser to wait a bit...prices will not get higher for sure and lots of interesting new things coming soon probably both from B&O and..maybe Apple..

An affordable Surround hub to connect B&O gear to any TV would be on top of my wish list...

 Greetings,

/P

Beolab 14 (or whatever they will call it) exists of a surround hub with speakers. Perhaps the hub (or surround amplifier) will be sold seperately so you can setup your own surroundsystem. More info will soon come from B&O. Should be connected to any TV or non-b&o brand system. Let's wait and see.

Hi Beofan53

That sounds exactly like a device I need in that case…( since I can't afford the new Bv11, which would have been perfect..)

Any ideas when it will be released?

Hi Peter

Don't dismiss the v1 very good value tv

Have one in the kitchen and use it more than my 1140 in main room!

I like the v1 it has a raw edge look and looks good in modern living rooms....

Don't bother with bv5 you will find it bulky and soon you will crave for hdmi connections and the technology is so outdated.

Ask stb to build you a motorised stand!

Good luck

Honestly I think BL8000 looks better with V1 than the BV3 (which I don't like).

I would NEVER buy a BV5 today since it is extremely outdated. Like buying a 50 year old luxury car.

If you like your BV3,buy a bv5.I have had a hd version from new and the picture and sound is still good, dont bother with a v1,its maybe got better connectins etc but so has most supermarket tvs.

The bv5 has proper b&o design and quality, unlike the cheap looking v1.look at my lounge set-up with my bl8000s,still looks good today as it did 10 years ago.I still think the b&o crt and plasma still produce fantastic natural pictures.

The bv3 you have is not hd and can still compete with alot of lcds picture wise and is in a different league soundwise.I have many b&o tvs inc a bv7-40 mk6 and still prefer the bv5 for atching day to day tv.

up to you

------------

Beolab 14 (or whatever they will call it) exists of a surround hub with speakers. Perhaps the hub (or surround amplifier) will be sold seperately so you can setup your own surroundsystem. More info will soon come from B&O. Should be connected to any TV or non-b&o brand system. Let's wait and see.

The BeoLab14 will come May this year. It will be a complete setup with BL's - so don't expect some kind of "hub (or surround amplifier)" to be sold seperately.

That would - in fact - make no sense, and force you to have several different remotes on your desk.

Besides, there are lots of good 'surround pre-amps' out there for your existing BL's - if you want to go down that route.

If one doesn't like the V1, just wait for the new tv coming later this year!

Greetings Millemissen

Well, I agree with you all, since you all have good points.. which does'nt make any decision easier! Crying

However, regarding the design of the V1, I suppose we all have different taste. I think it's bold of B&O to make a design that different and just like when BMW hired Chris Bangle, some people loved his designs and some people just hated them, but at least it made a statement.. something new and different.
Regarding the V1 I really tried to love the design and I think it would work in any of my other rooms, but not as a main TV in my living room.
Maybe I am oldschool, but I am still hooked on sleek elegant design in glass and aluminium.. but that's me.. Wink

I am prepared to pay twice as much, or even 3-4 times as much as an average plastic LED tv costs. But not 10 times as much, that is the case with some of the new top-of-the-line TV's B&O recently released. That's why I am looking at the second hand market. Even if it is tempting to get a really good Philips or Panasonic with a large screen and use my lintronic setup to control it and hide away a lot of preamps, surround-decoders and whatnot...That is not the way I want to go.. thats why I started buying B&O in the first place. To have it all connected, using one remote, and top class sound and picture and a design so stunning, minimalistic and elegant, that it looks good also when its not in use..

For a 1000 Euros, a BV5 is, to be honest, impossibly outdated. Even if a 50 year old luxury car has it's charm ( to use Michael's phrase) it can be terribly annoying in modern, everyday life even if the performance per se is great. And I already have an AV9000 and an AV5, and I don't plan to open a museum. Maybe a BV9 could be an option, if I can find one cheap enough...but then we are almost up on the same price as the BV11-40..and then again, it's already old..

I think I will continue to enjoy the brilliant picture, fantastic sound and stunning design on my BV3-32 a little longer until something new and exciting is released. I guess there are a lot of potential customers like me, that already has a lot of B&O but want to update without spending too much.

Meanwhile I am waiting,  I'll just move my chair a little closer to the screen so it will not look that small. Geeked

Cheers,

/P
