My father gave me his Beogram 2200 that he hasn't used for about 10 years.  I pressed 'start' and the arm moved over, clicked, then moved back.  Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is and how it could be fixed?  Thanks

I'm not sure what a pickup is.  The arm swings out at the same level to the correct position above the record then swings back.  The turntable then keeps on turning.

The pickup is the needle piece that is supposed to touch down on the record,If the arm return and a record is on the platter, you may have a failure in the electrical contacts inside the deck, or a mechanical failure, normally a good cleaning a lubrication inside the deck will do it.

Without a pickup cartridge (as Søren shows), the tonearm will hover and swing out (due to the antiskating mech.).
