Is there a firmware update which will allow an Avant 32 DVD (8443) to understand the PC command?

I already use the SAT and V(AUX) inputs via the STB-C, and I need to add a BeoMedia1. The best option seems to be to connect this through the DECODER or CAMERA inputs, but as far as I can tell, I need firmware which understands the PC command before I can do this.

The Avant is currently on software 7.20.

The latest software version for the AVANT is 10.2, but does not provide the PC facility

The following diagram gives an overview of teh connections needed to the different TV's

TV's using the S2 chassis are:-

  • BeoVision Avant, Type nr. 846X
  • BeoVision 3 - 32, Type nr. 881X
  • BeoVision 5, Type nr. 891X, 8931, 894X
  • BeoSystem 1, Type nr. 940X, 943X
  • BeoSystem 2, Type nr. 941X, 942X

Are you sure that you need PC, not just N.RADIO and N.MUSIC, which may be possible with Avant? - both work with my BV3 Mk1.

No, I can do N.RADIO and N.MUSIC with my BeoLink PC2, but this does not allow the creation of Favourites lists. Trying to find (for example) Singapore radio stations over the web without any on-screen menus is like looking for a needle in a haystack. The idea of getting the BeoMedia1 was to make it easy to navigate.

Keith, are you saying that I can't update the Avant to do what I want? I guess that means that I have a problem, since if I set the BeoMedia1 to use V(AUX) instead of PC then I won't be able to use both of the two digiboxes on the STB-C. Is there a solution to this?

As an aside, what would a software upgrade to the Avant give me?

You can configure BM1 to listen to V.Tape2 command. So you need to assign V.Tape2 source to a free connector of your Avant. Additionally you need to connect an IR-Eye to BM1 to receive the commands. Only PC-capable TVs can control BM1 via ML.

PC2 does allow creation of limited favourites lists through the Beo4 colour buttons - but I do agree it has limited functionality and you have to remember what is stored where.

On my BV3 you can set the quick access 'CAMERA' socket to be one of the 2 STBs (with STB-C IR control), hence could you move one of your current STBs to there, freeing up a SCART socket at the back for the BM1?

That's a very interesting idea, Guy. I hadn't realised that the Camera socket could be changed like that. I wonder which device the BeoMedia1 would then appear as - if the Camera socket becomes V(AUX) then presumably the SCART socket has ceased being V(AUX)!

Yes, I think you will just have to play around with the menus and see what is available - you should be able to set the close up CAMERA socket to be STB(SAT) or STB(VAUX), depending on what your other STB uses.

As stated above, you can then re-allocate the AV SCART socket as V.TAPE2 and connect the BeoMedia to it.  This is specifically mentioned in the BeoMedia manual for case where the V.AUX command is used elsewhere.  I think that you will need the IR sensor as hfat mentioned.

Good! I'm glad to have a way forward - thank you for that.

I remain curious as to what a software/firmware upgrade to the Avant would give me, and therefore whether it is worthwhile.

Short answer is yes, but I think other members contribution have provided you with a solution.

For your information, the features and problems resolved from your software version to the latest 10.2 are:-

New features

  • Provide support for DVB-S module. Note: DVB-S is only possible for BeoVision 3, BeoVision 5 and Avant DVD.
  • A new line is added in the service menu to be able to store a maximum volume setting.
  • Using Picture In Picture it is now possible to see two tuner pictures simultaneously using an external V8000 as the second tuner (TV - Picture - TV). This has always been possible on Avants with built-in VTR, now provided on all Avant based products.

Problems Resolved

  • If the product is set to Standby again shortly after turning on the product and before the curtains have opened, then intermittently a short red flash can be seen on the screen.
  • Intermittently the "Resume" function on DVD does not work when ordered from a Link room TV. Instead the DVD starts from the beginning.
  • Starting up an Audio CD from Standby may cause a short coloured flash on the screen.
  • False format change on digital satellite receivers.
  • Problems with turning on a STB quickly after a Standby command. In this situation there is a risk of loosing timer recordings if they scheduled immediately after each other, in other words two consecutive timer recordings from an STB.
  • Intermittent and volume dependent crack in loudspeakers when changing from external source such as a STB to DVD.
  • Playing DVDs on DVD 1 can cause intermittent sound drop-outs.
  • Instability in format handling when playing back DVDs on DVD 1.
  • WSS (Wide Screen Signalling) handling has been improved in different areas.
  • Problems with Picture in Picture in connection with a STB set up as "V Aux".
  • The product can suddenly but very intermittently switch off and is hereafter locked. Operation is only possible again after a reset of the mains voltage.
  • Support provided for both versions of DVD generations for Avant DVD, which are: ASD1 for the older Avants and SD3 for the new version.
  • Support for Mark II type of the picture tube.
  • Intermittently on some products and on some programmes the sound can disappear shortly (mute) and/or flicker might occur in the picture. This happens typically within the first 5 minutes after turning on the TV.
  • Very intermittently the motorized stand stops turning before it reaches its programmed position when started up from Standby.

Of course now not helpful as no analogue signal! Big Smile

Thank you, Keith. That's very helpful - the features and bug fixes all seem to be things I can do without for the moment.

I've come to the conclusion that the use of V.AUX on the BeoMedia1 menu setting is actually a red herring. It appears to mean "use IR eye instead of PC codes across MasterLink". Therefore, it would make no difference to the operation of the system whether I connect the BeoMedia to V.AUX or to the CAMERA input. It *might* even be possible to use the DECODER input - I'll experiment with this.

You are absolutely right. You can select any of the input connectors. I've connected my BM1 as V.Aux on DECODER.
