I just got my hands on a 1980s vintage beocenter 5000 but it is not working. Or I'm hoping I'm just not pressing the buttons in the right order.

There are 4 control buttons on the turn table and 12 on the control center on the right hand side.

When I apply power to the unit I can see two red dots appear on the led display. The 12 buttons are set out like this.

<<            >>          RECORD

P4           P5          P6

P1           P2          P3

PHONO TAPE     STD-BY

If I select any of the P buttons I get station presets and I can hear them and see the corresponding digits appear.

Press STD-BY turns the sound off and the two dots appear

Pressing the TAPE or RECORD causes the four led digits to display uuuu in the upper segments

The PHONO  <<   >> keys do nothing ( I have not tried to plug in an aux input though)

The record deck's buttons are layed out like this.

33          45

STOP    TURN

If I press the TURN button the platter starts to revolve and I hear a relay click the dB indicator lights up red to green and then off and I hear another relay click. The turntable stops turning when I release the button.

If I press the STOP and TURN together then the I get the same relay clicking and lights but this time the platter continues to turn and the arm cues up correctly. However their is not sound. Even if I try any combination of the 12 control buttons.

I have dissembled it and checked and re-seated all the connector as well as visually inspecting for any obvious "smoked" components but to no avail. Any tips or pointers would be very welcome.

Because I have no user manual I am just guessing how to operate it.

The << and >> keys are for the tape transport - as in winding forward and reverse.

The Phono button should get the platter spinning if there is a record on it, the Phono or Stop button (can't remember which) should raise the needle for manual cueing. Typing combinations should not be done as this can confuse the processor, it's meant for one input at a time.

Check if the Phono button does make contact.

And welcome to the forum Wink

Thanks Søren

It is flash three time with the uuuu, so it looks like it thinks there is no record on the platter. Any one know how it is detected?

The center tap detects the presence of a record. By weight.

The flashing uuuu is the processor signalling to you that it cannot perform the operation, you desired.
Get a copy of the user manual !

That's great thanks

I can see the switch under the platter, now I can test if that needs replacing or if it's a problem further down the line. If I need parts like these can they be supplied?

Yes, parts are available, but not from B&O.

I fixed it!!! Looks like the cueing mechanism was out of sync, I took the belt off, gave the platter a few resolution back and forth, applied power and it cue up properly from the phono button and it all worked. This is all interesting stuff, I am guessing that the switches under the deck had got into a invalid state. I love to know exactly how this gets like this and how it is normally fixed. Thanks for all your pointers.

Hi There. I came across a Beocenter 5500 and I have a problem with the tape: If I press << or >> it just klicks like two or three times, but nothing happens. Also: how do I actually play the tape?

I'm a newbiem sorry if this question is stupid but I'm growing mad 'cause I don't get it to work... Hmm

Thanks for a reply

Welcome to Beoworld !

Sounds like the tapedeck is in need of new belts. They all are by now if not already replaced.
I can supply correct belts.

Martin, thank you for the answer and the welcome.

Is the replacement difficult to do? I'm only getting started with these "things"...

Difficult ? - That depends on your skills.
I'd say the Beocenter 5000 tapedeck belts is in the easy-to-medium range.
I can include mounting instructions with photos and english text.

Hi Soren

Can you tell me where you found the user manual, please? I can only find it via silver membership of this forum, which at e15 seems a bit high just for the manual. Thanks!

Best wishes

John
