hi all, felt i should share something good that happened today, i visited an auction house nearby here in thailand, i don't normally bother because previous visits showed that all there was was a lot of tat going for silly money, not being able to buy anything here means any old rubbish from back home goes for silly money

imagine my surprise when i see a job lot of amp, two turntables and a pair of speakers on stands

the amp is a beomaster 1900, absolutely filthy and grimey, been on someones shelf for years with not a duster in sight, a beogram 1902, a regar planar 3 deck and quite large B and W speakers, marked on the auctioneers list as B and O

i know nothing of the beomaster 1900 what so ever but it looked great under the grime, i plugged it in and all the lights came on and the functions worked, the beogram 1902 looks battered , the lid is loose and someone has taped down the platter and the arm witha sort of gaffer tape which has come adrift leaving the glue all over it, looks a complete wreck, it had an MMC4000 in situ with a stylus guard

i thought what the hell, if only one piece works its worth the outlay, i bid and got the lot for 300 US dollars

on getting the lot home, i plugged my ipod into the tape socket and brilliant, it works great, after a few hours cleaning it looks good, the veneer is perfect and few scratches to the lid, the rega needs a belt but cleaned up great, the speakers sound good and i connected them to the beomaster and all is well

the beogram 1902 is another matter, the tape gunge is everywhere, the plug was from Hong Kong and after changing to a local one if fired up ,the selector for 33 and 45 worked its stops o.k. and once i took the stylus giude off the arm lifted o.k.

pleased with my find, particularly here and 3 out of 4 so far is not bad, how can i reconnect the lid, the rear seems to have bowed a bit, hope to test it tomorrow after connecting it up to the beomaster, wish me luck

Sounds like a good find!

The problem will now be to find a solvent for the gaffertape adhesive that will not destroy the aluminium finish that is very difficult to restore.

Someone like Lesley can probably tell you exactly how to proceed.

If it's Gaffer tape rather than Duct Tape then it's supposed to be easliy removeable with petroleum (or maybe WD40?) Having said that, will petroleum products dissolve the B&O aluminium coating?????

I always have success using Goo Gone to remove tape residue.  It's a citrus-based solvent that won't harm anything.

Eucalyptus oil is the best for removing adhesive! It's simple and doesn't damage other surfaces
