My Beocord 8004 has developed an issue with the eject operation.
When eject is selected the tape holding mechanism releases and the assembly moves about 1mm. If a metal tape is selected the lamp extinguishes as well, indicating that the contacts are functioning. Press down on the mechanism and the lamp relights.
However no amount of coaching will get the mechanism to fully deploy.
I opened up the 8004 looking for an obvious problem, but found nothing. I then removed the tape player and examined it from all angles and “threw in the towel”.
I do not have the time today to completely take the tape player itself all apart, so before I attempt this, is there any advice anyone can give me as to what might be wrong and how to correct it?
Also know that the assembly is NOS and has no more than 20 hours of play time.
Further there is no problem with tap play, reverse, or fast forward. It is only the eject feature that is somehow encumbered thus preventing the full ejection range.

A ball bearing from the cassette stabilization mechanism became lodged in the eject mechanism, once removed, we are back to normal.
Good find Jeff, its always nice to find the failures, enjoy some good tapes now.

As it happens I am listening to cassettes RIGHT now, but on my BeoCenter 9000. For the record, “Who’s sorry now” from “A night in Casablanca.” That is a Marx Brothers movie in case you missed it.
The Beocord 8004 is just fine, although it “misses” the cassette stabilization. Funky like a British automobile.
