So I was the purchaser of this beauty that appeared on ebay the other day. A Jet 505. It looks very similar to the iconic Beolit 39 except the dial and speaker are the other way round if you get what I mean. I must admit that I prefer the look of this with the lovely grain compared to the bakelite on the earlier ones. It was advertised as sort of working but that it wasnt picking up stations strongly so the antenna needed looking at.The dial is a bit worn but theres not a lot you can do about that.
First things first heres a picture of it in one piece.
I thought I would open it up to have a quick peek inside.
The back panel is very nice and crisp.
Heres the case with nothing in it.
The seller had stated that it didnt tune in properly and you couldnt hear stations as strongly as before. On opening it up it became obvious why!
The magnet had come unstuck from the cone so the speaker wasnt working well at all. Does anyone (ie Martin!!) have one of these speakers lying around. If I cant get an original I might just try and find a modern peaker that fits but would rather keep it as it should be. The good news is that when I roughly connected it up to a CX100 it picked upeverything you would expect so it was obviously the speaker at fault not anything else.
I also found this.
I dont think fuse holders are supposed to be glued together like this!
The dial cord is very, very worn and I expect it will fall apart at any moment but it looks pretty simple to replace (famous last words) Heres a picture of the chassis all lit up.
The huge bulb doesnt light up the dial directly. There is a metal plate between it and the glass. The light is reflected by some silver foil on the top of the case down onto the dial. This does mean that you get more light out of the back than you do out of the front!
This will really be used as a bit of an ornament but they really are good looking things. Its also quite a bit bigger than you think at not far off 2 feet in lenght. Overall Im rather pleased with it.
At work so cannot see pictures, but would it be possible to get the speaker repaired?

Peter, Im sure it could be repaired but its beyond my capabilities. If anyone knows somewhere that could do it, let me know.

Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
Without any hesitation, were this mine, I would be asking Martin and only Martin if he could help me.
It's beautiful, I'm glad to see it go to a good home
I have a couple of these old valve radios, and I fire them up once or twice a year just to see the dial light up and to hear the lovely static getting louder as the set warms up (not much AM programming left around these parts - mostly in the nighttime).
