I have a pair of S-45.2 speakers (circa 1978-1982) and I periodically see ads on eBay for S-45 speakers that look nothing like mine….. rather like an updated version clearly resembling my S120.2 speakers.

The best that I can determine is the Beovox S-45 speakers (circa 1983-1986) is a cosmetic “improvement” coupled with a distinct cheapening of the speaker itself.

Do I have this right? If not, why not.

The later version S45 is not a bad sounding speaker.

It's big drawback is the foam surrounds on the bass driver. I had a pair of S50's I really liked had plenty of bass which the original S-45's were a bit light on.

Really it just depends on your tastes and whether you want to go to the trouble and expense of most likely having to refoam your bass drivers on the revised versions

I have a pair refoamed, with my BM 2400 they were playing in my workshop for over a year, its one of those speakers you dont tired of listening to. Good background music, normal level radio, one can listen to them the whole day without fatigue

Ricardo and Søren,

You have both managed to thoroughly confuse me and I do mean completely.

Ricardo, while the original S-45.2 speakers did not have the bass of the S-75’s, I, who adore bass, perhaps in the extreme, do not find them lacking in this area…. NOT IN THE LEAST!

Søren, I confess I have no idea what you mean by your saying that you can listen to speakers all day without becoming fatigued. Perhaps I am missing something, but honestly I could listen to virtually all of my speakers, save the S120.2’s forever in pure and unadulterated enjoyment. Smile

I am not saying to don’t choose my speakers depending on my music selection. If I want BASS like for the organ, no question I would choose the McIntosh ML-2’s with their four 12” woofers.

If I want unbelievable crispness say for harpsichord or violin, then the Linn Isobarics would be a natural choice. A very natural choice and a good one for most any occasion!

That said, for amazingly accurate reproduction sans a lot of fanfare, the S-45.2’s would be an excellent choice.

And if you want the basic sound of the S-45.2’s with just a small bit more boom, the S-75’s take center stage.

Back to Søren, perhaps my hearing is less sophisticated than yours, but I really don’t tire of any of my speakers except the aforementioned S-120.2 speakers, which in my opinion are not very good, except in the high end. Ricardo, if you are looking for speakers with poor bass response, look no further than the appalling S-120.2’s.

Søren, all this discussion tosses me back to another thread where several members, including me, suggested that you need to add a pair of S-75’s to your collection. Now, more than ever I suggest you redouble your efforts to find a suitable pair.

Of course I am like you, trying to live within a budget, but finding the “right” deal I would dearly love to add pair of M-150 or MS-150 speakers to my collection. Why? Because on paper, they sound incredible.

Well that makes me really happy to know I am not the only one who can become really confused by speaker selection. In a way  you answered your own question in that depending on how you want to color your sound you might select one type of speaker over another.

Right now I am listening to a Beatle LP on the BC9000 using RL60.2. The sound is full, expansive and well detailed. Much more alive than if I use the Beovox Cona CX100 set.

The S45-2 is a wonderful match for my 2400 but I just like the S-75's bigger sound footprint better.

I guess in the end it doesnt matter what the other forum member opinions are about one speaker set vs another. My ears will be the final judge in the end.

Btw,  the S-75 was an excellent mate for my pizza box set up.

I do prefer the look of dual fret on the revised uniphase

I was just thinking about my answer to this, Richard beat me to it, my answer would have been nearly the same except for the sneaky  pizza box- S75 remark (Soren you will have to get S75s, goes even with your pizzas)Smile

As for the bass preference, Go and listen to an symphony orchestra concert, you will never hear these electronic made deep and/or booming bass tones, I have a setup, front, center and sub woofer, mostly for watching movies, playing music very seldom the sub is kicking in, the bass in the 3702 is normally enough for music, but dolby sound from movies sometimes makes the window panes rattle, the sub is a small Dayton Sub 800, that does it for me. As Richard mentions, its up to you and your preference, and the condition of your hearing. My hearing is shot after nearly 50 years in noisy working environment.

This is such a small topic yet profoundly interesting. Thank you guys for the mental stimulation. I also thoroughly enjoyed the “sneaky pizza box” commentary, which was brilliant.  Big Smile

Søren, I had never thought about it before but you are entirely correct about the boomy electronically altered sound of our home stereos vis-à-vis an actual live concert. And like that typical consumer I have been “conditioned” by my environment to both like and expect a lot of bass.

As for speaker selection, there is where specifications kind of fall apart because in the end it is what we, the listener likes….. and this is as it should be.

I have talked a good deal about my 42 year old McIntosh ML-2 speakers which continue to amaze even after all these years. Not always well treated, twice being banished to the garage due entirely to changing tastes….. the “Mediterranean” look that was so popular in the early seventies has not aged well, but the cabinet appearance does not diminish the marvelous sound these massive speakers produce.

I don’t have too many regrets in life, but if I had it to do all over, I would have purchased the ML-3’s, which were known as “over-kill” in their day with their 8 12” woofers. Of course if I find the ML-2’s ugly, can you imagine taking that ugly garish look and making it a third bigger. (Maybe I choose right the first time…)

Søren, I am not sure how we got fixated on S-75 speakers, but if you want a speaker that you will never tire of, In my opinion you would be hard pressed to find a better choice than the S-75.

I acquired mine one at a time from a friend in California who decided I needed these speakers. This friend looked for bargains on eBay and when he found one, he purchased it and shipped it unopened to me.

No doubt this coloured my view of these speakers negatively in that they were not exactly a matched pair, basically someone’s rejects and the veneers were/are far from perfect. These speakers got tossed around until one day I actually sat there and listened, very belatedly realizing how truly nice these speakers sound.

Then fate dropped a second pair for free on my doorstep and I have become a major fan ever since.

We all have different tastes, but I am virtually certain that Søren would enjoy the S-75 experience.

I bet it would even make his 901 sound more robust. I really really liked matching them up with my Beomaster 1600.

I got the idea of mating the S-75 with my BS 5000 from Peter - he had mentioned once that he had run that setup and liked it.

My choice was S-75 and BM5000. That was the setup I kept the most in my office. Later I tried it with 5500/6500/7000 BM's , but the result was not impresiv. With a little fatigue as mentioned above :)

I started out with a set of type 6302 S-45's (the earliest style) and recently picked up a set of type 6427 (the later early 1980s style with the split front). The type 6302 and 6312 have three components and the 6427s only have two. I have found that the 6302s are a bit more neutral and some might find them a little less distinct. The 6427s are easy to refoam and definitely worth it in my opinion. They have a 'sharper' sound to them and, of course, look awesome on the optional stands.

One last thought, I would disagree on Piaf's comment that the speakers were 'cheapened'. Yes, they are down one component, but they have a slightly different sound than the 6302s. I would not call it better or worse, just different. It all comes down to preference. Also, after refoaming you must allow a period for them to burn in again before you can really compare the two.

S45-2 speakers sound better than they should - pure serendipity in my view. The  S75 rather wrecks it by having a loose bass and slightly sharper top end but some of us like that at times! The later twin grille S45 is not similar at all - the S55 is the speaker to compare instead, and this too is a super small speaker.

Unfortunately, the only way to judge speakers is to listen and compare and few of us will get the opportunity to do that now. Make friends with Martin is probably the best way! Smile

After Peter’s open INVITATION for speaker comparison at Martin’s house, I think him well advised to stay hiding under the bed for at least another week. Crying

As to speakers, evaluation is almost completely a matter of the listener’s taste.

I am a BIG FAN of the S45.2 speakers because of their accuracy and am amazed that “that sound” comes out of such a small box.

Wade, since speakers are such a subjective choice, I have NO doubt that many people would find these later S45’s pleasant to listen to, however it is less costly to produce a two-way speaker than a three-way, as in the first of this series, and this newer S45 had no DIN connector.

Concluding with Peter’s comments about the S75’s “rather wrecks it by having a loose bass and slightly sharper top end but some of us like that at times!” I agree the S45.2 is more accurate and wonderful to listen to, but I also thoroughly enjoy the “loose” bass of the S75 and more crisp treble….. however I do not like one better than the other: I like them both!

The only time I have ever had problem with loose bass on the S75's is when listening to digital files via iTunes or iPod. The way I solved most of that is by clicking on the EQ and setting it to bass reducer.

Really helps smooth things out.

Changing from a beogram using an mmc cartridge to my Dual TT using a standard iron can color the sound. More bass heavy out of the Dual.

The speaker set I could never figure out was the S80.2. The sound was only average for most sets but plugged into a Beocenter 7700 or BM 3300 it was magic. Or perhaps my imagination was running away with me.

But it has been stated before on these forums that some speakers and amp combos work better with each.

S80.2 is a completely lifeless speaker with anything I have plugged it into, including a BM7000 and 9500. I did NOT get to try it out with my BM8000 before I sold it so perhaps that would have been more enlightening. As it is, I gave them to my friend who I bought my JBL XPL-140s back from (the JBL XPL series is probably the best completely unknown speaker line I have ever heard) so he could have "something" to listen to. He hates them but lives with them for now. They actually came with the BC9500 I bought as a package, and I have no idea how the prior owner endured that sound.

Piaf, I think this is a very healthy discussion and I am finding all the points valid. One other thing I might add is that the mids are much more apparent in the original 6302 than the 6427s. I'm sure most on here would expect that given the two vs. three components.

On a side note, I am finding that this thread is helping me re-evaluate what I notice about both my 6302 and 6427 speakers.

Ricardo,

I have never heard the S80.2 speakers, but if they are anything like my S120.2 speakers I understand your point. The S120.2’s are simply unforgivably God-awful. That said I paired them with my second set of S75 speakers and they add a bit of zest to the upper end, where they are, in my estimation, too crisp, but in combination with the S75’s the foursome some quite nice.

Wade,

I am glad that you are enjoying this discussion, as am I.

I was gifted with my first pair of S45 speakers for use with my Beomaster 2400 and I didn’t like them: bland, noisy, (made crunching sounds), etc.

Then when I was gifted with a BeoCenter 9000 it came with a pair of S75’s and a pair of S45’s, the latter shorted out the BeoCenter due to two bad speakers. I went back to the original pair and found two donors for the bad speakers and I couldn’t believe the sound.

The S45’s deliver a sound that is more realistic than the S75’s and I admire them for that. As mentions previously, I have seen comments that the S45’s lack bass, but I have not found that to be the case.

The S75’s however are more “fun” to listen to. I definitely would NOT say that one is “better” than the other, just different.

One speaker set no one has mentioned are the Redlines. Redline 60's were my first B&O speaker set used with a BM3000 (80's version) BG3000 and CDX. I liked the arrangement. Very versitile in how they can be placed. I know the girls at the dance studio sure  like the set I gave them.

While I cant comment on the 140's and would never bother with the 35's I have had a set of the 60's and still have  set of 60.2.

In fact, right now, i am listening to the Don Ho classic "Tiny Bubbles" ( don't ask why ) on my Beocenter 9000 driving my 60.2's.

Not my favorite set but not a bad set either,  For looks they compliment the BC 9000 quite well, IMO the later 60.2 with the tuned bass port was an improvement in sound balance over the original 60 with the foamed ABR plating.

I have used them on and off pairing them with different setups and have never been really disappointed just that I have always found another speaker that I thought maybe sounded or matched the sets look or surroundings a little better.

They even work reasonably well with an old Beomaster 4000 or 2000 they just don't match the look of the vintage sets.

You're tempting me into trying to find a pair to listen to.  There's probably a mod or three you could do to it to make them at least listenable (with little effort or expense).

By the way, went to Beocentral to look for a photo and/or description of the S120.2 and there isn't a page for this speaker.  The S120 page states the S120 model was replaced by the MC120.2.

Hi Rich,

I have never been as disappointed with a pair of speakers as I am with these 120.2’s. I tried them with several amps and the unpleasant sound persisted. While it is conceivable that I have a bad pair, I have never heard of anyone who liked them. In fact my B&O maven friend purchased a pair and was so totally disillusioned with them that he resold him immediately.

As mentioned previously I finally managed to find a combination that works, that is paired with a set of S75 speakers, which draw less power, thus over-power the S120.2’s. The end result is the “unique” muted sound adds an overall “spice” to the music.

Now the dangerous part, I am reconfiguring this particular set-up and raising the S120.2 off the floor and to waste height which may bring their annoying attributes into too much prominence. If so, back on the floor they will go.

My household is largely in boxes in preparation for a move, the S120.2 included. So time to get back to un-boxing and reacquainted with my possessions.

But first today is my birthday Cake and I need to pick up a bottle of Montrachet before celebrating with the family at my favourite steakhouse this evening. My friend Søren mentioned in his incredibly interesting BM4400 thread that it was his birthday a few months back and I enjoyed the response. So I figured, what the heck, I’d mention my birthday in this thread too.

Hi Søren,

Why thank you kind sir!

We have a beautiful and very large liquor store in our neighborhood, but they didn’t have a single bottle of Montrachet in stock, instead referring us to their store in very high-brow Oak Bay. I knew I was in the right place when I saw the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph in the parking lot.

Liquor is taxed at an insane rate here in British Columbia, so with the reality that is my wallet in mind, I purchased the second cheapest bottle, while politely passing on the opportunity to purchase the one for $1,800.

Then on to The Keg, a steakhouse right on the Victoria Inner Harbour waterfront with a view of the Legislature building, part of a small chain out of Vancouver. The Victoria restaurant is the oldest remaining restaurant in the chain, totally unchanged since the early seventies. (which I remember well.) Smile

While there was no music, the peppercorn NY steak was superb. The surprise gift (from the restaurant) of a delicious mocha ice cream cake with caramel and chocolate sauce finished a very, very nice evening.

Then tomorrow, back to the un-packing. But for now, a little more Birthday celebrating! Drinks

It really was a pleasant birthday, thank you for your well wishes! Big Smile

Curiously, it looks like those are set up in cabinet principle and driver arrangement and size virtually the same as the S80.2. And yeah, godawful is probably about the way I would describe those.

On the S80s, I did read a thread on Audiogon about someone who "found" a pair somewhere or was given them and thought they were utter rubbish until he connected them to some old Harman Kardon amp which miraculously made them come to life. Similar to another comment i read earlier in this thread about different Beomasters doing wonders for them, basically. Though color me skeptical, they're just... bad.

I have a recapped BM1900 and for a few years was running a set of refoamed and recapped Beovox S55 on stands. Curiosity got the better of me one day and I purchased a pair of S45-2.

The first set were dropped by the courier so I went about getting a second set locally for parts. I decided to give the second set a go before I parted them out.

Mounting them on the same stands as the S55's and plugging them in, I was immediately blown away by the difference. The s55 have always sounded nice and performed at the level of sound I would expect from a cabinet its size.

The s45-2 are in a different league, their bass is deeper and does not boom, the high end soars and the soundstage is very well presented. The S55's walked out my door with a happy buyer about a month ago and I haven't thought about them again.

I decided I could no longer dismantle the second set for parts, so set about finding a damaged third set for parts to repair the first set. My den now resembles a Beovox S45-2 frat party.

Hello Drew,

The S45.2 speaker is a very accurate compact speaker, and very easy to appreciate.

I have read several postings where the bass was found wanting, but I agree with you that these speakers have a robust bass and indeed are NOT boomy.

We kind of/sort of shared the experience of parting out these little gems. I was gifted with a truly ugly pair covered in stained, yellowed white Formica. I decided I couldn’t live with the appearance so I covered them in faux wood which looked amazingly good… but they still sounded crummy, so I kept them in storage.

A handsome second pair arrived with my gift BeoCenter 9000, but they had issues that shorted out the amp. So I used donor speakers from one of the ugly speakers and I too was blown away by the sound.

Just finished refurbing S55's, and they clearly lost the game to my S45's. I think biggest problem is their weak woofer.

Recently picked up a set of S35 first edition. Was originally going to pass but then I read a couple posting by some of our more distingished board members and decided to go ahead and accept them.

I have had plenty to compare them against and I must say I am happy. The S35 is genuinely a wonderful little two way speaker. A hidden gem  within the older Beovox range.

I used to have a set of S35 - really nice speakers, they came with my BM1900!

Interestingly I have found a few things about my s45-2's now I have been using them for a while and thought it was worth asking other S45 lovers if they have experienced anything similar.

I have two pairs of s45-2 which are setup next to each other.

My pair of S45-2 are Pair 1, they were acquired with a Beocentre 2600, they have the shiny black dome tweeters, they have not been recapped, they have the original caps which are a silver colour with red writing and the cabinets are okay but not fantastic after a clean up, I have been looking for a better looking set to make my primary pair.

I recently acquired Pair 2, they were from the original owner. Barely used in 20 years, stored indoors in a stable environment. The cabinets are as good as you would find on a 30 year old speaker, all drivers look great, it appears they have never been removed from their cabinets. They are a later pair of s45-2 with the later dull black tweeter and brown/gold ROE caps.

When I got pair 2 I compared them against Pair 1 I noticed that Pair 1 have a crisper treble (perhaps a little more transparent), a little less midrange definition and a little more bass in the bottom end around 90-100hz than Pair 2. I looked at the crossover network and really couldn't see a reason why the bass in pair 2 would be less than pair 1 as there appeared to be now 'filter' on the bass as such. I also checked the impedance on all woofers which measured the same at 3.9ohms.

At first I wasn't sure why there would be this obvious difference, I tried swapping woofers to see if it was a specific issue with the woofers not being used for so long in pair 2 however the problem didnt follow the woofer so it was something else about the rest of the cabinet (crossover drivers, etc)

I decided to go down the path of recapping pair 2 with some Jantzen Cross Caps, the original caps were gold/brown ROE caps.

The recapping didn't really seem to make much difference to the sound of pair 2. The light weight bass remained, the upper registers did clean up a bit.

I gave it a little more thought and came to the conclusion that perhaps the older caps in pair 1 might be colouring the sound a bit giving an over exaggerated treble response and a boomier bass response with a drop in midrange, certainly the bass in pair 2 is tight.

I cannot see anything else in the crossover circuit which would be affecting the bass response of the woofers in pair 2, all resistors have measured fine with no signs of overload and the coils are perfectly in tact.

Has anyone had similar experience? If anyone has recapped some s45-2 can you tell me if you experienced some of the things im talking about (reduced bass / tighter bass and a bit of a reduction in top end, perhaps smoother top end)?

Comments/help appreciated.

Andrew

Recapping my S45-2 pair (with kit from Martin) brought mine back from the dead (scratchy sound from phase link) so I can't help you. But I did want to caution you in handling the woofers as the magnets are known to slip yielding a seized woofer.

Hello Andrew,

First of all Rich is correct about the magnets slipping and destroying the woofer….. happened to me.

As for older caps “coloring” the sound with added bass and crisper highs, if this is so I am most definitely going to leave my S45.2’s alone as I find them extremely accurate with plenty of bass and natural sounding highs. A joy to listen to.

Don't fix what isn't broken, right?

Me? I can't help modding loudspeakers. It's one of the fun aspects of the hobby for me. While I never put green marker around the perimeter of a CD, I have tried the Mod Podge and other tweaks on speakers. I always recap whether I like the sound already or not. It's just in the DNA, you know?

Just finished rebuilding broken bass drivers on a set of S-45.2. and it was a success ... sadly I will be replacing a tweeter on one of the speakers as the overload damage to the crossover reached as far as the driver and shorted it out,

But that is another thread discussion. I am with Rich I always recap the old speakers when they come in. Now as far as your Magnets are concerned Andrew you need to get some epoxy and lay a bead around the outer edges of your bass drivers.

It is not a matter of if they will slip it is when they will slip. They will fail at some point if they are not attended to.

Had an S45 bass magnet slip a year or so ago and it wasnt from shipping or moving the speaker around it just slipped. Worked on Saturday but locked up on Sunday.

Every magnet on every s45 I own has already been glued, it's just not worth not doing it!

So does anyone have any ideas about the bass issue can anything in the crossovers affect bass output? Which component would I look at?

Are there any mods to the crossovers anyone had done to improve bass response? Perhaps someone has done this to my first pair?

I certainly read posts on here and figured any speaker of this age should really be recapped to get the best sound which is why this situation confuses me!

Thanks for the good advice, but I wasn’t planning to touch my S45 speakers. Like you said, don’t fix what isn’t broke.

What I meant to say was IF the crossover in my speakers is aging and has colored the sound, I like it just the way it is. Point of fact in my opinion you would be hard-pressed to find a more accurate or pleasant speaker, so trust me, the only work they will get is dusting the cabinets!

However I did take the advice a glued my woofers.

and here are two examples. the first one is the $30 dollar rebuild. the second is the $3 dollars rebuild. Honestly can say I can't tell much difference between the two.

I will say that in one of the rebuilds it really did breath new life into a tired set of speakers. In the other set I ws simply replacing old caps. Up to you when and how you do it. Your own ears and wallet will be the final judge of that.

Agree with Richard and Andrew, new caps, I had the same experience as Richard, no bigger difference between "designer caps" and the cheap electrolytic.

Well my hearing is not the best, but I still hear when something is sounding badSmile

Hi Andrew,

It is always “conceivable” that a new cap set might evoke a different and possibly crisper sound, but I rather doubt it. Although my ears suffered through the disco era, they are still reasonably discerning.

The second reason I am in no hurry to change something I already like is the fact that in many ways I prefer the less accurate and more dramatic S75 speakers.

What's the model number for the speaker stands that go with the S45-2 speakers? I need a pair of stands.
