Hi everyone,

I was asked to repair a Beolink 5000 today with a badly cracked LCD screen and I thought that my findings may be helpful.  The screens for these remotes are only available from B&O as a combined item with the PCBs at a price of over £300 GBP in the UK!

I found that the broken display can be removed without affecting the operation of the remote.  As long as the remote is not needed for 2-way operation (ie. with a Beomaster 7000 or similar), then the display can be replaced with two sheets of 2mm picture glass to give the same appearance without losing too much of its functionality.

Dimensions of the glass should be as follows:-

Sheet 1) 61mm x 35mm x 2mm

Sheet 2) 56mm x 33mm x 2mm

Sheet 2) goes into the screen holder first, then this is held in place by sheet 1).  They should be an interference fit if they are cut correctly to size, or you can secure them with a small amount of superglue (cyano-acrylate).

To program the remote to 1-way operation without the use of the screen (as per page 26 of the manual), press POWER OFF, then SHIFT (underneath the remote) then MENU.  Press PLAY, then the Down arrow (to set video to 1-way), PLAY, Down arrow (to set audio to 1-way), then PLAY PLAY to store the settings.

You can test 1-way operation by selecting an audio source and a video source from any B&O system with 1-way remote functions.

Hope this helps to keep a few more Beolink 5000 remotes in use instead of being discarded due to the cost of new screens!

Kind regards, Steve.

Steve.

Very good. It is a shame to think that in a few years, a fully working Beolink 5000 will be a very rare thing indeed!

They are such a crap remote, I can't think why anyone would want to bother. Get a Beo4 or better, a Beolink 1000!

I do seem to be out on a limb with the link5000 and 7000 sometimes lol. I just love the designs though, the idea and design is everything B&O IMO, even if the 5000 is let down by its ergonomics it is still beautiful in design and the concept was always cool!

I personally do NOT like the beo4!!!

I think it is a mediocre solution, sorry Steve.

I assume that nothing is displayed, no TV, Radio etc, correct?

So, next thing is to programm it by these steps without any confirmation. But all these remotes have the same problem: accidentally hitting the table too hard and it loses it settings. The batterycompartment is the culprit for this. A modified version was available at that time.

So, again you need to reprogramm, as the standard setting is set for 2-way control. Keep the re-programm instructions nearby..

Hi Beobuddy,

Yes, I agree with you, but the only alternatives are:-

1) Pay £300 GBP for a new LCD screen Angry

2) Scrap the remote Crying

This "repaired" Beolink 5000 now looks almost the same as it did before its accident, it sits in a Beo4 wall holder and works perfectly as a link room controller over Masterlink to a Beovision 8 and Beosound 9000 in the main room (hence the change to 1-way control).

Any better suggestions?

Kind regards, Steve.

Yep.

Try to improve the batteryholder. Make sure that the batteries don't lose contact.

Hi Steve,

with our experiences of Beolink 5000 I wonder if You know if the Displays of BEO4 and BEOlink 5000 are interchangable?

I have 2 working BEO4s and one BEOLink 5000 with  broken glass. As I only need one BEO4 I would like to scrap one and  try to repair the BEOlink 5000Smile

Kind regards Joergen

Hello Steve,

Were you able to find a supplier for the top glass ?

I am able to install another (E-ink based) display, to restore 2-way operation ( see this thread ), but my repair relies on the top glass being in good condition.

Regards

Hi,

Sorry I gave up on this and used a different remote instead, I don't know of anywhere that can supply the glass and I don't get involved with repairs myself.

Kind regards, Steve.
