1 year 7 month ago I refurbished my BM 4000, Last week it started giving loud cracks and sounds in the left speaker, when turning it on, and 2 days ago the left channel died, just a little hum. This with my newly done CX100, changed left to right, still no left channel, so BM 4000 gone bad.
Changed the BM 4000 with my BM 4400, lets see how long that will go, at times I drive them quite hard.
The BM 4400 is now connected to BG 5000, Beovox P45, sweet sound.
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
Søren,
Sorry to hear about your handsome Beomaster 4000. Trust me, kind sir, I know the feeling, although not recently. ¡Gracias a Dios!
I sure wish you would find a reasonably priced pair of either S45 or S75 speakers as I would love your opinion of either. It would be especially interesting to have your comparison between your much admired P45’s and the S45’s.

Hi Søren!
I for one shall be following your repairs with great interest, as usual.
So here we go again!
I don't remember: did you replace the trimmers?
Good luck on this one then

I did replace the trimmers, but it will take time before I get to repair again, have a lot of work at the moment, going to El Salvador for a big job 2-3 weeks, and have some jobs waiting in Mexico, outside Mexico city, then I want to go to DK, so it will be autumn - winter before I can get to it.

Sorry to hear about your BM4000. My favorite piece of kit, except for the BG4002 probably.
I dont understand it, there was never any heat on the cooling elements, I touch these more than I touch my wife, no funny smell and no smoke, only this knack sound turning on the speakers with the speaker switch and volume on "0". And then after a week or so suddenly only a faint hum.
Maybe an issue with the switching assembly?
sonavor: Maybe an issue with the switching assembly?
With headphones same failure, so not the switches
Søren Mexico: sonavor: Maybe an issue with the switching assembly? With headphones same failure, so not the switches
Hello Søren,
I am a bit intimidated by the vast difference in our skills and experiences with things electronic, so I really hesitate even suggesting that you might want to check all appropriate switches. Headphone use would not have any effect on the selector switches (PHONO/TAPE/FM).
As you likely remember I am (was) having two switch issues vis-à-vis my Beomaster 2400. The TAPE button would cause an unbelievable SCREECH, the kind that shatters speakers if the button is not depressed firmly.
I also “lost” my right channel completely, most likely an issue with the BALANCE control, but it went away before I could play with the switch.
Now I am in no position to say that switches are your problem, BUT I do think it is worth investigating….. I mean how much time could you waste playing with the switches?
If it doesn’t help out, you haven’t lost much and if this is the problem, you will have saved yourself a whole lot of trouble, especially with all the work you have on your schedule.
All the very best!
I have a $17 4000 I have robbed a part or two off of. If you confirm it is the balance slider I have one to spare.
Got to it today, I must confess my brain is not what it used to be, took me some time to get into the schematics again. I normally remembered things like this in the past, but now I get confused with the other BMs I did. But after an hour of reading I was on track again.
Opened up the BM 4000, dust free after 2 years use. Left channel missing, so the first was the balance slider, checks OK. Checked the V on TR49,50,51,52 cross checked with the right channel, All OK, Went to the Darlingtons TR57 B leg showed 72 V, TR 57 bad, desoldered to confirm, now to find out why, resistor 577 should be 15K shows 110 Ohms, measured on board, cross check to right channel shows 15K, TR54 also bad (checked on board), thats how far I got until now. Next to check will be the 8.2K resistor, and the diodes. I have in stock the TRs and resistors so later today or tomorrow I will continue. After the success with the 4400, I may consider doing the same here. Or at least all diodes and TRs.
Hi Søren,
I gotta say I am really proud of you tackling yet another Beomaster, but as handsome as your 4000 is, there can be no doubt that it will be worth the effort.
Being much less ambitious (and knowledgeable) than you, tomorrow my big event will be bypassing those damn overdrive protection switches on the MC120.2 speakers, as I lost my right speaker completely today.
Back to the Beomaster 4000, I sure look forward to your advancing reports….. although there is zero chance that they will be as exciting as your Beomaster 4400 repair saga.
All the BEST my friend!

My BM4000 went down in the EXACT way. Back to Benny (AGAIN) it goes.
I am so disgusted with that money pit I may never plug it in again.
But it's pretty.
Meanwhile, my NAD 7175PE sounds better and has more inputs anyway.
But enough about me. Good luck with the repair.

Right, PIB. I´m thinking about doing the same in the 4000 as I did in the 4400, but I found that TR 54 MPSA 13 didnt have good connection to the cooling element, and this may have caused the failure of NTE 245/246 that I used instead of the MJ 2501/3001, or the NTEs are of less quality. In the right channel the I am using MJs that I got from Martin (I think). The 4000 failure does that I will have to postpone other projects or just put it aside and leave it for later, I still have your BC 5000 here to do, and I´m anxious to get at it. Lets see what this week brings.
And hope we dont get 5 pics of good looking BM 4000 on this thread

Anything like this?
If it makes you feel better, the transformer on that is really noisy. That's why it lives in the storage along with the books I don't consult daily nowadays

Mine is dead quiet. Did they use a different transformer in North America?
Rich:Mine is dead quiet. Did they use a different transformer in North America?
I dont think so, they all are switchable from 110V to 240V, As I know they are prone to be noisy I opened mine to check. The transformer is in the housing, where the space around it is filled with some plastic material. Mine was OK, the filling was solid and in good contact with the housing, In the noisy ones I think the filling material has lost contact with the housing and that causes the vibration, my idea, when I had it open was to fill the gaps with epoxy. I dont know if this will help, but it was my thought at the time.
And thanks for the pic Mika nice looking BM

Off topic, I know, but I couldn't help noticing the diversity of books on that shelf...
Martin
I believe it is the transformer windings themselves that become loose under the epoxy(?). And because it is sealed, there is precious little you can do about it.
Some people have reported some success by using rubber grommets to mount the transformer, but there is very little space to add anything. Usually the hum goes down to acceptable level, if you choose the surface under the Beomaster and/or add soft feet.
