My newly acquired BeoCenter 9000 cuts back on power levels multiple times when connected to a pair of S-75 and S-45 speakers.

The S-45’s have issues with a non-working tweeter in one and a frozen woofer in the other.

Would these malfunctioning speakers have anything to do with the power cut backs or is this more an issue with a 30 watt per channel amp having trouble with these two sets of speakers connected at the same time?

I had a similar situation with my much admired Beomaster 4500 when I was powering three sets of inefficient speakers and the 4500 protested by cutting back on the volume.

My real concern is not so much technically over-taxing this under-powered amp but rather that there is something actually wrong with it.

This BeoCenter you see was dropped off at a re-cycling depot and I am understandably curious what else is wrong with it beyond bad door belts and a failing capacitor.

With a 97.5% probability the broken woofer is overloading the amp, which isn't really up to driving two pairs of larger passive speakers to begin with.

Why do you play with obviously broken speakers?

The BeoCenter arrived with the two pairs of speakers; however I lacked speaker cables for them and temporally “borrowed” the speaker cables from my Beomaster 2400. It was only after new cables arrived did I find that the S-45’s had issues.

With the sound quality so poor coming from these S-45’s I immediately disconnected them and the overload situation appeared to disappear.

While it seemed obvious that the broken speakers were the net cause of the problem I was merely double-checking to make sure.

The BeoCenter came to me with bad door belts and a failing C2103 capacitor; as such I am keeping a close watch to see what else might be wrong with this 9000.
