As a preamble, yes I know this is a B&O forum; however I mentioned in passing in an unrelated thread that I needed help locating a drive belt for my Tandberg 9000 Reel-to-Reel taperecorder.

Typical of me, I can’t find the thread. They tell me at my age I will soon forget where I parked my car in the parking lot, so I guess this is to be expected.

Senility notwithstanding, I followed up on several leads you guys kindly provided and was informed that my 9000 does not have ANY drive belts. I don’t know, it sure looked like a drive belt issue as when I pressed PLAY both reels would go limp, but press STOP and they tighten up back up again.

Well the Tandberg guru was right; the 9000 has no drive belts. Belts for the counter, etc. yes, but not the main functions.

What I discovered beyond the dust of a thousand years, and a retaining spring lying uselessly on the side was the play button connection needed a bit of cleaning, and like magic, I was back in business.

Did a methodical cleaning of everything with special attention to the heads and anything that comes in contact with the tape….. and was well rewarded for my efforts. (I also re-attached the retaining spring.)

The plastic bits are going away due to age, but otherwise this deck performs extremely well.

Anyway, I posted this as a follow-up piece knowing this ain’t a Tandberg forum, but as we all appreciate high end stereophonic equipment (or we wouldn’t be here) and since most of us have equipment from other brands; I figured no one would mind my mentioning my “little victory.” Big Smile

These are very nice decks.
Many moons ago I collected Tandberg open-reel decks and have owned almost the whole range.
Most are gone by now but I still have a couple of 9000x and 9100x decks plus the odd and
of course the daily user 10XD.
There is something magical about watching something rotating to produce sound.  Laughing

Hi Martin,

I couldn’t agree more, those revolving reels really add something to the music. Big Smile

I purchased this Tandberg 9000 new in 1971and to my discredit I have allowed it to collect more than its fair share of dust due to lack of use.

None the less with a little TLC (Tender Loving Care) coupled with the resolve to get it working again paid off in big dividends.

The sound quality is fantastic, absolutely fantastic, and the functions are so tight, crisp, well almost German I f you know what I mean, but impressive by any measurement I comprehend.

I just wish all the plastic turquoise buttons/switches weren’t falling off. Clearly there was something VERY wrong with the plastic formula of the day.

P.S. I also have the wired remote control, which is really "cool" today! Lets have a Party !!!

I absolutely love those old Tandberg decks. Great quality, clever engineering and exquisite heads. We have a 3300X at the studio that matches anything we throw at it, though we keep using it as a delay effect Wink

It'd like to own a 9000-series sometime to accompany my Revox B77.

Vinyl records, cassettes, open reel, valve amplifiers and film photography.

Søren,

I love my old Tandberg 9000 too. Great sound and never has seen a repair technician.

Tandberg was a great company with an interesting history.

Now split up into various companies incorporating the name.

I need one if I can move into a larger apartment sometime.

Thanks! It has been bigger, but it is still taking up a room at my Parents' house as the Beolab 8000 system serves me well at the moment...

Yours aren't shabby either! Yes - thumbs up

We sold Tandberg back in the day at the store I worked at in college. Just beautiful gear, I'm envious! Also sold Revox, and Uher. I still have fond memories if the Tandberg open reel in the shop, some may think the Revox a superior machine but the Tandberg was much more attractive.

Jeff

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

Hi Jeff,

I was genuinely surprised at how easy it was to get my Tandberg 9000 operational again. And I must say the engineering is amazing.

I purchased this 9000 new some 42 years ago (Do I ever feel DATED!) and it has never seen a repair shop.

The interior was shamefully dirty/dusty, but that oversight is now corrected.

Basically all I had to do (talk about simple) was to clean the play contact and replace a retaining spring that had been somehow knocked off and I am back in business.

Definitely one of my BEST purchases in life! Big Smile
