Hi everyone,

I hope this is the right place to post :-)

I've just purchased my very first Bang & Olufsen System, a Beosystem 5000 comprising of a Beogram 5005, Beocord 5000, Beomaster 5000 and Beogram CD 50.

I'm absolutely in love with this system already but it does need a bit of TLC and that's where I'm hoping you can help...

First the Beogram 5005 -

It all seems to be working properly - sounds very nice, the only problem is the platter motor - should this be totally silent? mine makes a bit of noise (you have to put your ear close to hear it). What parts should I oil/grease and with what? (ie motor, platter bearing, arm transport etc)

Next the Beocord 5000 -

When I first put a tape in it wouldn't play, I took it apart and found that the belt that drives the counter had perished, I cleaned all the gunk away and fitted a new belt and it now plays fine. But when I record if the music is quiet it almost seems to distort (mostly on the right channel), It doesn't do this when the recording source is loud only when low. Any Ideas? Also the capstan (I hope thats what its called, its the part that drives the tape past the rubber pinch roller) is continually turning.. is this how it should be?

Lastly the Beogram CD50 -

This plays beautifully but its louder than the turntable, tuner and tape player - i think that they're probably all like this but would like confirmation. And the drawer is a little stiff, it struggles to open and close, what parts need greasing and which grease should I use.

I know there's a lot here and its a big ask but I would be most grateful for any help/tips you could give. Or if you could point me at some how-to guides even better :)

Thanks in advance,

Lee

Hi Chartz,

Thanks for your reply... I did spend a good few hours looking through the forums but couldn't find the info I need.

I've managed to find a guide to dismantling and changing the belt on the CD50 but it doesn't mention what grease to use and where... I've got some Servisol silicone grease 70 (spray grease) is this OK to use?

I've got a email from a kind guy that's advised me the noise on the beogram motor is cause by a plastic collar inside the motor coming loose, I need to strip the motor and re-glue it. Can anybody confirm this?

No amount of searching the forums or google comes up with information about the beocord problems I'm having... can anybody help me on this?

RE Belts - I've emailed Dillen - thanks for the tip :-)

Thanks again,

Lee

The distortion could be some kind of Electronics problem (maybe some caps).
And - yes - the capstan is running as long as the Beocord is turned on -even without a cassette in.

I had some problems with mine after cleaning an lubricating everything, as I didnt find any failures in or on the boards, I, for the third time, disconnected all plugs on the main PCB, Cleaned all plugs and jacks with Deoxit, connected and disconnected the plugs several times while the Deoxit was still wet, then cleaned one more time with Isopropyl alcohol, and one more time Deoxit. That did it, it has been playing without problems ever since.

You may have other problems, but clean the plugs and jacks before you go looking else where.

Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.

Hi,

About grease and oil.

I use scale model special silicon grease because it is made for plastic wheels, but the white cogwheels in the CD50 don't need much lubrication. Just thoroughly clean everything with white-spirit before re-oiling - yes, you will have to pull the wheels completely, because of old sticky grease.

Don't forget the sliding stud. Use normal grease here.

For spindles I use special spindle oil and for motors sintered brass bearing special oil, the one I also use for capstan bearings.

Look for Revox oil on eBay.

The Beogram motor is not dead silent. It is a brushed motor! A drop if oil at the spindle may help though.
