Thinking of buying one off ebay - I have never heard one before - does it have treble and bass controls?

Cheers

You can adjust tone, yes.  The Century sounds great - especially when wall mounted.

The only things which play up are the door sensors and cassette decks (which usually clog up with dust!) - but on the whole they are very reliable. It has transit screws, so don't forget to ask the seller to tighten them up (they are on the rear of the unit, usually with stickers pointing to them!) or you'll find it'll rattle itself to an internal death..

For quick visual reference, the later versions have silver clampers and the earlier versions black/grey.

Hope that helps!

And don't forget the active FM antenna to make the Century complete. You need the wall bracket or table stand as well.

The sound of the Century is amazing!

Lee, Leslie, Razlaw,

Many thanks for your replies - You've sold me on one !

I'm downsizing house in a couple of weeks and am thinking of having on of these in the shower room. Will have to find a way of supplying ( and wiring into) the Century with a low voltage DC power supply to keep it safe. I'm sure Mr Jarman will be able to help me out!

Thanks again

Cheers

Got one!

Bang-Olufson-Beo-Sound-Century

A fairly reasonable price, I think.

Unless you're having a very small bathroom - or you are planning to place it close to the showerhead, there's no need for that...
You can use the ordinary power outlet. Don't you have power outlets in your bathroom?

Here in Denmark most people have power outlets in their bathrooms.

Be aware, there are strict regulations regarding 230Vac use in a bathroom. Bathroom areas are defined in zones. Please Google and you will find enough information.

Yes, definitely new cloths - SWMBO will choose the colour!

Re location - it'll be going in the shower room - not the shower! This site safety-in-the bathroom says that sockets should be 3mtrs away from the shower - the century probably will be about that distance from the shower, but I still want to have it wired into a low voltage DC feed rather than 240V.

Safety first! Why not using a Beolab 2000? For that you need a masterlink but because of damps and humidity in your bathroom I don't think the Century would like that.

Thanks for that suggestion Leslie - I do own a Beolab 2000 that I've never used! However, I'm totally unfamiliar with how masterlink works....

I will have a Beomaster 5500 and a CD50 in the bedroom. (this could be changed to a Beomaster 6500 and a Beogram CD6500)  So, several questions....

Is it simply a case of running a master link cable from the bedroom to the bathroom?

No power leads required for the beolab?

Will I be able to control the beolab's volume with a beolink 1000 in the bathroom? Or does it need a sensor to be connected to it?

Will I be able to switch from radio to CD from the bathroom? Also, how do I control the volumes of the beolab and the speakers (CX100) in the bedroom independently (Is it possible to switch off the speakers in the bedroom whilst I have the beolab playing in the bathroom?

Any advice will be much appreciated!

Cheers

Nigel

You can not connect the Beolab 2000 directly to older systems such as 5500 or 6500.

You'll need a Beolink Converter box to connect them, as the BL 2000 uses Masterlink and there are no Masterlink sockets on the 5500/6500.

When connected correctly, you can control volume and switch between radio and CD from the bathroom -with your Beolink 1000 or directly on the Beolab.

Many thanks Steffen.

I think I will persue the Century option - I have to say I'm very impressed with the sound. As opposed to the active aerial - I will need to hook it up to an outside aerial. It's eventually going to be wall mounted so I will probably sell the handle and aerial - was very surprised to see they go for £45 on ebay which will bring my outlay down to about £110 which is pretty amazing. In the meantime I need a table stand which I don't seem to able to find on ebay or anywhere else.....

I'd love to own a Century, keep my eyes open for one but have never seen one on this side of the pond for a good price that was in good shape.

A black one was used in Boomer's apartment on Caprica in the TV show Battlestar Galactica. Wall mounted.

Jeff

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

Well, after having thoroughly enjoyed the Century in my office for about a month now, I've decided I need 2 more! I never cease to be impressed with the sound every time I switch it on. Need one for the kitchen and one for the shower room. One for the kitchen I need straight away, but the shower room one will wait until next year when we alter the room itself.

Can anyone tell me what the serial numbers / corresponding years are for the Century. I want to get a later one as possible.

Cheers

Nigel

The Century is a great sounding unit.  You'll be amazed how much better they sound on a wall though...

A very warm, analogue sound - which you can listen to for hours and hours.

I'm currently listening to vinyl on a lovely 1964 RG611 DeLuxe (quite rare actually!) in my study which has that same warm sound..

Great piece of kit - I have two, one purchased new, one from e-bay. Totally trouble-free after many years of use, altho' I replaced the glass door in the e-bay unit as it was chipped. I still play compact cassettes ! so the Century is perfect.

They respond to the BeO4 remote and the volume can be controlled from a BeoCom 6000.

I agree with Leslie - make sure you get the FM antenna and the wall-mounting kit for best results - you won't be disappointed.

I need to stop reading these posts as this has now become another "want".

Any suggestions how I can get another system behind the wife would be greatly appreciated

LOL Mark!

I honestly think these are the best value for money B&O you can buy. I sold my Beolit 600 for £300 a few months ago which compared to £150 for a Century is barking!

Get it in the right colour and show the Mrs the sound and you won't have a problem!

Anyway,  can anyone help me with my serial number question????????????

I like the look and feel of the Century, very B&O.

I'm ready to buy one for the kitchen but...

It was replaced by the BeoSound 1.

Do you think the sound of the Century is the same than the BS 1 ?

I still hesitate...

Not here in Spain! First shock (no pun intended) when moving here was to see mains switches and sockets on the bathroom wall!
