We often think of a highend audiophile listener as someone who sits before his very expensive equipment analyzing every bit he hears and then compares the same to what he hears with another pair of cables, another DAC and so on.

Please check out this article of the Computer Audiophile Chris Connacker: Why do we listen to music?

http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/540-spin-silver-platter/

Maybe it isn't that different from what many a  B&O listeners does when listening to music!

You may disagree with his taste of music (I certainly do), but this is very interesting stuff anyway.

I wonders if he would have 'enjoyed' the music even more if his equipment for the session had been his Mac Pro, a descend optical to coax converter and a couple of BL5's 😉

just a shame that the max optical output from the macbook is limited to the S/PDIF standard for optical, which is up to 96kHz, so hi rez ish but not 192

That is indeed an issue - but it was not my point in the post.

The point was that enjoying music doesn't seem to depent on the 'right equipment' even for a 'super highend audiophile'.

(With the Macbook he could also have used a USB-DAC going analog into the BL5's.)

Don't disagree at all with the conclusion that the music is more important than the fidelity of the system - I grew up listening to UK chart music on "275 & 285" AM radio (as well as 208, under the covers, late at night) - the music I heard blew my mind. I've always remembered albums, not amps & speakers - to the extent that talking about amps and speakers is almost certainly a male only, internet only phenomenon............. talking about music is a social activity (that even women can join in)!!!

The trouble is, people pontificating about high fidelity will insist it's an art or something beyond science - it really isn't, we can measure stuff well below the audio noise threshold, we can measure and make order out of stuff in the gigahertz region, many orders of magnitude beyond the audio spectrum, - in fact your phone wouldn't work without it! Still there are those that claim there are mysteries beyond the means of man between 20Hz and 20KHz. The truth is speakers are really difficult to design, comparatively the rest isn't. Unfortunately, if everyone took this for granted then most hifi publications (and stores) would go out of business - and here we are, discussing it without women!!!Geeked It was always thus!!

+1

If half the claims of the high Enders were true all MP3s would be unrecognizable noise.

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

The music is indeed more important for me than the equipment. This doesn't mean I don't care about the equipment.

I remember some old thread on Beoworld, where someone in the know claimed, the average B&O owner had less than 10 albums...?

Not to be self mutilating here, but it wouldn't surprise me at all. Most B&O owners I've met (not us on the forum, or other B&O geeks) very seldom even use their B&O equipment (besides their TV). My parents and brother come to mind.

This is surely much because of the "design only" standpoint that has really been fueled the last few decades. When I got into B&O back in -96, no-one would have said "it's only design, too expensive for what it is". Most of my friends stood amazed by my B&O stuff.

They're still amazed, but they wouldn't be amazed by a Beocenter 2500 anymore. Today it takes Beolab 5's and Beovision 9's... And the comments always ends with "silly money".

Too long to list....

I think it was 5 x CDs ...

And I believe it was a joke about the BS 9000 only "storing" 5 CDs ... but of course one had 6 or CDs then one could always buy additional BS 9000s for the link rooms Smile

That is exactly the reason why I did not buy a BS9000.

I have 600 - well, maybe not that many, but still more than 💿💿💿💿💿💿
