My Dad came over this afternoon with his 5000 turntable for me to look at, before I do anything wrong may I ask you guys for help

1. the brushless motor on the Beogram, in the past I have squirted a little oil on the spindle, but I have run out of the oil I was given many years ago, what is the best replacement oil to use ?

2. the platter spins perfectly but sounds as though something is catching it, it makes a little scraping noise when a record is spinning, I took the platter off but I cannot remember what I did last time to help the platter spin silently

3. the lid has a bulb in it, it has blown, but I cannot fathom out how to replace it, do I carefully pull the white plastic out and somehow remove the 12v bulb ?

4. the magnet on the lid is now missing, I can get a magnet cut to size tomorrow, but I need to remove the old glue first on the acrylic lid, have tried with alcohol, and nail varnish remover, neither seem to work, what solvent is the best one to use on these plastic lids ?

5. also the acrylic/plastic lid is a bit scratched up, I have used Xeropol in the past, but it is a bit expensive now, but it did work pretty well I seem to remember

I have tried T-Cut, some Brasso and even Toothpaste this evening, but there must be something better that everyone uses

1. The Beogram 5000 does not use a brushless motor.
You cannot lubricate it properly without taking it apart - and they rarely need lubricating, once every 20 years or so.
If you drenched it yearly in something, however, that may need cleaning out by now.
2. Check the transport safety screws and then the platter height adjustments.
4. Use no solvent on acryllic. Nail varnish remover is acetone, it attacks most plastic products irreversibly.
Use plastic-polish and elbow grease.
5. No good plastic polish products are cheap. I use Novus products, #2 for polising and #1 for final cleaning. #3 is for more serious scratches but I rarely use it.

thanks Martin, good job I had the presence of mind to post my worries and doubts here first 😛

will make a good start on his lovely sounding 5000 tomorrow evening, he has three carts, an MMC1, a 2 and 4, all sound pretty nice on his deck

any info welcome on Q.3

Dillen, my confusion, yes the 1800 and 5000 use a flat rubber belt driven by a tacho-controlled DC motor, and the belt's compliance acted as a mechanical filter preventing motor vibrations from reaching the record and stylus.

The magnet is sitting in the deck top plate, the acrylic cover has a steel angle glued to it

thanks Soren, will make a little steel angle profile for my Dad tomorrow

any ideas on how I replace the bulb in the lid without causing too much damage ?

I checked the service manual but there's no mention of the bulb, undoubtedly because it's a shared manual with other model turntables that don't have the lid light.

When you open the lid, simply pull the small black plastic cover under the lamp down. Use your nail or a small screwdriver.
Then you have access to the bulb.

Hope this Picture will help...

Oil

While you are at it change the belt if not done, Buy from Martin (Dillen) and get the lamp from him also

The lamp: take out the white lamp socket from the black support, pull out the lamp. I did a thread once about BG 5000 but now I dont find it. Archived forums
